To think someones wall on facebook is not the place to post messages of condolence...

If you have to do it via Facebook then why not use the private message facility.
A colleagues husband was killed last night and already other colleagues are posting their support which in itself is lovely but this is a public domain and we don't even know if all the family has been contacted yet.

Agree. I'm so over Facebook, seems to be the cause of much marital disharmony, petty arguments and other unnecessary behaviour.

A condolence message is something that should be relayed privately, not spread all over a public website.

What if facebook is really the only way you do communicate with that person?

A cousin of mine left a condolence on my sister's facebook after our grandfather's death. (Not our cousin's grandfather). But they had only got in contact because of facebook, and had not ever communicated privately. I didn't think that was weird - but I guess in other circumstances I might have. If it had been a partner in tragic circumstances then that would be a bit impersonal.
