To not correct my 3 yr old ds when he makes mistakes with language?

I never correct him when he says things like 'I winned mummy! I winned!', or 'I hurt one of my foots' because I think its so cute

Definately not - this is the part that you want to savour. It's a lovely stage.

VinegarTinselTits · 28/11/2008 13:49

YANBU he will learn the correct words eventually, enjoy the cuteness while it lasts

Miggsie · 28/11/2008 13:50

Don't bother correcting him.
Eventually he will "self correct" and say the correct thing anyway, so there's no rush, and it is cute.

Wallaroo · 28/11/2008 13:50

Agree it is very cute but I also believe you don't need to correct them by telling them they are wrong, a simple reply with you saying it correctly is all that is needed to help his language development, ie "Well done, you won!!" "Oh no which foot have you hurt" or something similar - you get the idea

Having said that there are some words that are to cute not to use. Our latest is a sleepy bag instead of a sleeping bag!

jumpingbeans · 28/11/2008 13:50

Oh don't correct him, you will be sad when he stops doing it and starts saying everything right, I love it when lo talk about themselves as a third party, makes me smile.

sweetkitty · 28/11/2008 13:52

I don't correct them mine always use her instead of she "Her did it" when I talk abck to them I will say "she did it" but wouldn't correct them all the time.

VinegarTinselTits · 28/11/2008 13:53

Actually thinking about it though, when ds2 says the wrong thing i always repeat it with the correct word (but i do this automatically without thinking) its not exactly correctly him just repeating him iykwim?

ie if he said 'i winned mummy' i would repeat with 'you won, thats wonderful' or 'you hurt your foot, come her and mummy will kiss it better'

Reallytired · 28/11/2008 13:53

Its never constructive to openly correct language. It smashes the confidence of the child. Its better to model correct language back.

For example

Tyme ds: 'I winned mummy! I winned!'
Tyme: Yes, well done, you won! you won!

Tyme ds: 'I hurt one of my foots'
Tyme: 'Oh dear, you hurt one of your feet. Let Mummy rub it better'

It makes me absolutely wince when mothers make their children repeat things correctly. I think Tyme is taking the right approach and I'm sure her son will develop excellent speech.

Iklboo · 28/11/2008 13:54

I don't correct DS - he sometimes corrects himself though which is a bit odd ('I doned it - I mean I did it). It's so cute

Wallaroo · 28/11/2008 13:56

It's a great age though isn't it. DS is really good company at the moment, his language is developing so fast. He's fast asleep on the sofa at the moment though in his sleepy bag as he is poorly

RaspberryBlower · 28/11/2008 14:13

I was saying to my SIL recently about some of the cute things her ds used to say when he was first talking - I remember them because we visited at that time and I don't get to see them often. But SIL had forgotten most of them! So I've resolved to write dd's down because I'll probably forget too.

Blondeshavemorefun · 28/11/2008 14:20

i correct,as thats how they learn

but in the same method as VT, it happens automatically

KatieScarlett1 · 28/11/2008 14:32

My ds1 has a thing about cars and says "weemscreem" instead of "windscreen" I love it but DH corrects him' Corrects me too sometimes in an absent kind of way which is a slappable offence!

AnnVan · 28/11/2008 15:33

my MIL has a 3yo who calls night 'darker day' which is really sweet. MIL gets really wound up by the mum of one of her DD's friends who always correct her son 'no F it's not that it's this' etc. THe little speech mannerisms are so cute while they last.

callaird · 28/11/2008 19:59

I love when kids get muddled up with their words.

I looked after a little boy (who is now 22) who used to say "my got sweaty eyes" when he was crying! I loved it and remind him of it alot!

Another lttle boy used to say scamble geggs instead of scrambled eggs but he didn't know he was saying it wrong, if I repeated it back to him, he would say not scamble geggs, SCAMBLE GEGGS! A lot do not realise they are saying it wrong and will get it eventually, why correct them? I think it is adorable!

oh don't correct them!

DS1 who is three, can't wait for 'farmer christmas' to come.

ChirpyGrinch · 28/11/2008 20:14

I also repeat back with the right words but don't correct, however DH and I love to amuse ourselves by making DD1 say computer
'Say Com'
'Com'
'Pew'
'Pew'
'Ter'
'Ter
'Now say Computer'
'Conkewper!'

Oh and machines and all Mameens for some reason!

Thomcat · 28/11/2008 20:17

Hmmm, wellll, i don't correct them per say but I do sometimes just say 'oh really darling, did you win, that's brilliant' or 'oh no you hurt your foot, poor you', something like that.

DD2 today saw a church and said 'ohhh look mummy it's heaven'.(bless) Found that one a hard one to correct as it was so cute. But I said 'oh yes darling so it is, isn't it lovely. Some people call it a church and people who go to church believe in heaven which is up in the sky'. And she looked up at the sky and said 'oh look mummy another heaven' God I love 2.5 year olds

No....dont correct them...it is cute.

My DD often shouts "Mummy, where you are" when she is looking for me....and the other day she was talking about her armbow (Elbow).

They will be talking properly soon.

Thomcat · 28/11/2008 20:43

Oh I don't correct everything, and I never properly correct them, as in 'that's not how you say it'. My DD also often says 'mummy where you are?' too.

Grumpyoldcaaaaaaaa · 28/11/2008 20:50

My DD2 used to call elephants 'ferrets'. There was no way I could correct that!!! 'Foots', 'sheeps' all too cute (but I do the correction without correction thing - "Ooh yes, look at all the sheep'). She cals the computer the 'oncutor' too. We love that!!

TheNewsMongersGeansaiNollag · 28/11/2008 20:53

My 3 yr old son doesn't talk at all. he babbles incoherently and I beam back at him.

YANBU.

I do correct my 6 yr old though.

DontlookatmyNoseImRudolph · 28/11/2008 21:04

My favourite one of ds1's 'words' is "bumbum bee"

He's too cute to correct but I do what other people have said and just say it back correctly like "Yes, a big bumblebee" etc
