am I the only one who is irationally irritated by people who don't use punctuation?

As a rule I am not a pedant, and my spelling can be questionable .

But when I come across sentences where people use no punctuation it irritates me irationally. partly I think because when the screen reader reads it, it reads it in one long string, so I almost expect it to take a deep breath when it's finished.

And surely it must be really hard to read?

Good to hear you're well wannabe.

blueshoes · 25/11/2008 13:43

Just noticed I started the sentence in lower case. Damn those shift keys

claw3 · 25/11/2008 13:47

Blueshoes - U bad girl, rite 100 x I must use the English language correctly

stillstanding · 25/11/2008 13:59

I hate poor punctuation but then I hate bad spelling too. The OP wasn't properly punctuated and words were misspelt but it was perfectly understandable.

IMO you have to consider context. In a letter, for example, poor grammar/spelling/punctuation etc really gets on my nerves but on an internet forum it only irritates when it makes it hard to understand or the meaning is not clear.

cheesesarnie · 25/11/2008 14:08

But what if you really cant help it?
if you have trouble with spelling/prounouciation,is it better not to post?

btw, im all for people correcting me on threads if i've got it wrong.

fizzpops · 25/11/2008 14:19

Stealthsquiggle I punctuate properly in text messages too! I keep telling myself to lighten up a bit but just can't bring myself to do it

rempy · 25/11/2008 14:20

of course, capitalization is a different matter entirely....!

OrmIrian · 25/11/2008 14:25

its not irrational words with no punctuation have less meaning and can be nonsensical if you see what I mean total gibberish and very very hard to understand

debzmb62 · 25/11/2008 14:31

don,t forget some people aren't perfect at everything
i aslo hate text talk and nit pickers l8ter !!!omg end of the world coming !because some of us are shit at grammer !!and to top it spelling holy shit !!!!

TrillianAstra · 25/11/2008 15:04

One long paragraph with no punctuation = a good proportion of MNers are not going to read your post. So you'll only be getting the advice/opinions of a fairly skewed sample.

Who does bother to read a 10-line paragraph that's all one sentence? Are they saints? Or do they like pain? Or do they think that pepole who write like that must be having a really hard time so are more in need of sympathy and advice?

Question for those who can't spell: am I allowed to respond to your post normally, and then put 'PS It's XXX, not XXX' at the end?

I write full sentences in texts too. Let's start a club.

DaphneMoon · 25/11/2008 15:07

Me too on the text front, I hate text talk, one of my friends uses it so much I cannot understand some of her texts. I always write all my texts in full and use exclamation marks and question marks where needed. They get a bit long because of this sometimes though

debzmb62 · 25/11/2008 16:47

i,ve been MNing for a good few months now and have had answers to my questions and response with no problems maybe until now ?

2shoes · 25/11/2008 17:04

I am terrible with punctuation.
someone tell me the rules again please.

wannaBe · 25/11/2008 17:12

I think there's a difference though between a sentence/paragraph that has a mistake or two in it, and one that is written entirely in txtspk with not a punctuation mark in sight.

I imagine we all type while doing/thinking of other things, so it's natural that there will be some errors.

But writing "a post in txtspk and hopin that peopl wl read it and understadn wat yu r tryin 2 say and will have respec 4 ur opinions based on that" is totally different.

And actually, having just written that, I think it's a lot harder to write in text speak than it is to write in actual English.

So why bother?
