OK - I have not been on mn very long - months rather than years , so all those "it was so much better before..." threads go over my head. But... I do think there seems to have been a bit of dumbing down and increase in bitchiness over the months I have been lurking. I do realise there is an irony to me as a new mnter raising this and quite admit I am not very entertaining, but there seems to have been a different, less judgemental and more fun feel a few months ago. What has happened and am I alone?

yawn
that said, I do miss the posters who have left

GrimmaTheNome · 24/11/2008 23:09

As someone who has occasional MN binges, I can't say I've noticed that much of a difference except for all the threads like this, and not having to do so much decoding (or should that be decodding)

But if there is a change of mood, I blame the credit crunch. And Sarah Palin.

I think there are still spurts of fun. I have changed the time I mumsnet and find evening is a good time. I miss cod but can't remember most of the other posters who have gone. Where's slur? Has she gone?

VinegarTits · 24/11/2008 23:13

It has highs and low, people come and go, the vibe changes daily

i dont know why folk expect an open internet forum to remain consistant, the mind boggles

AstroPup · 24/11/2008 23:13

I really dont understand this sort of thing.
Mumsnet is HUGE, your experience of it is just that - your experience of it.
The sections you choose to look at may not float your boat at any given time but guaranteed there will be plenty of MNers who still think its great.
Dont mean this to offend or against you personally but imo to announce that MN is boring/not as good as it was/unintelligent is just a bit egocentric.
Your experience of MN is not necessarily representative of anything but you.

Good point astro pup. I think that when I found it I was so pleased because I felt very in tune with it. You're right tho' - its not just for me!!

Popcorn is a reference to the entertainamnt value of a thread that is likely to kick off. Ditto hard hats.

strugstu · 24/11/2008 23:47

I have been a MNer for a few years - i come and go as i please and no one really cares- but sometimes people will remeber you from athread and will say hello- you can speak as you find- you dont have to explain where you've been if you dont want to - i find it useful if i have a problem/dilema i will canvass opinion and know i'll get straight answers/thoughts/ opinions - its game for a bit of fun from time to time- and it can be addictive- i think the best way to use it -is dont take it too seriously dont take things to heart and dont waste all your spare time on it - like i have for the past two hours!

Tortington · 24/11/2008 23:54

cyclical.

people say this shit every few months,

there ae some very very very very enertaining newbs about that trump some of the gone and soon to be forgotten oldies.

samsonara · 24/11/2008 23:54

Well said VinegarTits and Astropup !

cali · 25/11/2008 00:04

have been on mumsnet for several years but like strugstu, I come and go, don't really get noticed and don't post an awful lot. Do I care, no, not a lot. It gives me something to do in an evening when I'm on my own.

Mumsnet is not real life, you can post what you like with complete anonymity if you choose.

Everything goes through cycles where things will evolve and change into something slightly different than before, it doesn't mean it was better previously, but just not the same as it is now.

Excuse ramblings, have been up since 04:30, when dh left to go to airport, then worked a 12.5 hour shift, put dc's to bed and have had several glasses of wine.
Really nice wine though

cali · 25/11/2008 00:06

slightly x posts with custardo, but I started typing after strugstu's post and thanks to wine intake, took rather longer than expected.

strugstu · 25/11/2008 00:11

cali- i am very impressed you are still coherent after such a long day and stated alcohol consumption -RESPECT

cali · 25/11/2008 00:18

4 years of nurse training has taught me something , not working tomorrow so can excuse wine intake slightly.

MadMarg · 25/11/2008 07:15

I've come and gone over the last few years, but with new names, because quite frankly I don't want a whole lot of anonymous people knowing who I am.

So I think you're making a big assumption that the 'old' people aren't here anymore. Granted some probably aren't - and their distinctive 'style' would identify them no matter what their name - but some of the others possibly are still here, but under new IDs and not making a big song and dance about it.

On other websites where you can chat, I am a bit more identifiable, but i use them for different purposes.
