to get to the after school club this evening to find Pirates of the Caribbean on?

So my ds is 5 and is one of the youngest at the after school club (he's only there one day a week and it varies from 4-11).

Today when I pick him up the giant screen has potc on (I think the third one). Looking at the box I can see its a PG-13 (though it was a pirated copy to hard to tell).

I am not so worried about the content although my ds is really too young to be watching potc without me to explain etc but more annoyed at the fact that I wasnt asked. I was saving potc and star wars etc to watch as a family when I knew he would understand everything thats going on and not be scared by some bits.

so aibu to be put out?and what should I do about it - just have a word with the manager - really they should be doing age appropriate stuff anyway.

YANBU - DVD's at after school clubs and similar places should be age appropriate.

I'd complain.

I am really bad at complaining - i get really intimidated - should I just write a letter to the head office? and how connected are the after school club to the school - they are not run by the school but as a separate concern - does this mean that I dont mention it to the school at all?

as the evening goes on am getting more and more cross which isnt like me at all...

I would definitely say something. My ds would get nightmares watching something like that. For that age group I think it should only be PG stuff & even then I'd want to know why they aren't doing something more productive than watch a film.

Definitely complain. I once didn't complain about some stuff that I saw at ds's nursery (safety issues) & I really regret it now.

Ask to speak to the manager, ask how often they watch films, how the films are veted, and what provision they make for any children too young to watch to do something else away from the film.

Good luck!

I ran an after-school club for two years, and twice we showed films - each time we sent a flyer home with a choice of four for parents to choose from - it's totally inappropriate to show something outwith the correct age range, you should certainly say something.

CatMandu · 21/11/2008 19:25

I agree with the above posters, but wanted to add that my ds is 5 and loves, loves, loves star wars so 5 isn't young for that at least. He can tell you the plot line across all the films!

janeite · 21/11/2008 19:31

I would complain - not least because they certainly should not be using pirated copies of anything. And bits of it I think are far too scary for 4 and 5 year olds.

snigger · 21/11/2008 19:34

The thing is, everyone knows there own child, and may or may not permit 'underage' viewing - but that is the parent's perogative, and not something that should be disregarded by a care provider.

giantkatestacks · 21/11/2008 19:37

yes I think I will complain - I was just worried in case I was being a bit precious -

Its weird because last week they watched Dumbo - and my ds loved it...what is the thought process there - this week we will do one too young for some of them and not week too old...gah

Rosie you're right -they need some provision to separate them off into age groups and if there isnt enough staff to do this then they shouldnt stick the film on...

I have issues as well with their games consoles but thats another story.

sorry - that should have been 'and the next week one that is too old'

I'd mention it rather than go for a full blown complaint, perhaps the older ones had asked for the film and they had put it on without thinking.

As for the games console, the club cater for 4-11 - only reasonable there should be activities for the older ones too.

prettybutterfly · 21/11/2008 20:08

It was not age-appropriate. AND it was pirated!

Yes, I think I'd complain. I think I'd really really complain!

southeastastra · 21/11/2008 20:09

maybe they just didn't think twice about it. ask them to get a policy for films

yes it is quite usual tbh. they do some craft for some of the time and go into the sports hall as well but then watch a film/play games.

i will have a word with the manager next week - i need to find out that my ds was definately watching it (he said he did but you know what 5 year olds are like)
