A new estate has popped up near to school so dh and I thought we would go and have a look after work this evening. We are tarting up our 1 bed flat at the mo, and need a 2 or three bed. We think we can afford about 200k.
Sales lady: what are you looking for
w: 2-3 bed, under 200k
sl:[much teeth sucking] well we dont have much, what position are you in?
w: well we need to sell our flat
sl:[sucks teeth, shakes head] flats aren't selling
w: ok
sl: whats it worth?
w:xK
sl:We couldn't do part exchange, we do have these [pulls out some details] but really they are for first time buyers [more teeth sucking]

She was soo patronising, and condersending we are obviously too poor for her development, but blimy, what makes a house 'only suitable for first time buyers really?' What is that all about? Why couldn't she just be nice and straight forward? All the teeth sucking and head shaking GGRRR. Of course I didn't say anything, just nodded along at the hopelessness of my situation...

Wait and go back in six months when none have sold ,you will get a much better deal!!!

Nagapie · 20/11/2008 17:43

With the market being the way it is you would think that she would be jumping at the prospect of some buyers...

RubySlippers · 20/11/2008 17:43

she sounds a bit silly

in this economic climate they should be biting at ANY potential sale

why don't you call their head office and get some more information?

twinsetandpearls · 20/11/2008 17:47

They were similar with is the other month, am relived as I did not really want a new build box. We could go up to £275K which is not an insignificant amount of money IMO and you would think we had offered her a plate of dogshit and a lollipop for one of her boxy houses.

wonderstuff · 20/11/2008 17:48

Decided I don't want to buy from her now, nicer lady at another local estate, was fab, showed us round show home, was nice, was interested, we will go back to her next month when the flat that won't sell is on the market.

TSAP glad its not just me, actually have been to an other development by same company and the lady there was a stuck up old cow too. After all the problems we've had with our 100 yr old place fancy a shiny new box

Honestly! You should call up their head office and tell them.

She's lucky she's in a job in this market.

When we moved back down south we were practically laughed out of one estate agency. They were really, really rude.

BTW, we bought a 'starter home' (all we could afford - half the size of our old house, twice the price) and it did our family of four until we moved 18 months ago. A new build starter might be a bit smaller though. Ours was from the 80s - they did them bigger then.

KatieScarlett2833 · 20/11/2008 18:16

This reminds me of when DH and I went to buy our first house together. I was visibly pregnant and very, erm, comfortable, in my choice of clothing, DH was in jeans. We were young. The sales chap was extremely patronising and couldn't wait to get rid of us presuming that we were wasting his time. Until we made an offer and he discovered that we had no chain, a very good deposit and were civil servants. His attitude change was amazing to behold. Barsteward.

Ronaldinhio · 20/11/2008 18:32

Could be a badly trained sales monkey not able/equipped to move with the market?

wonderstuff · 20/11/2008 18:58

What is it with these people, being nice and polite is free surely? No need to be snotty at all?

Saleswoman clearly a daft mare.

I had a similar experience to Katie - when we bought our first flat we were 21 and 22, wearing jeans and converse. One estate agent was really snotty until we pointed out we were first time buyers with a £12k deposit and a mortgage agreed. (£12k was a lot of money for a deposit back then.)

A year ago i had the same problem, we were going from a decent size 4 bed on an estate worth about 240 to a large 4 bed with granny annexe, down a private road etc worth 400 grand and how i kept my cool with some agents was unreal, being only 27 and not smartly dressed some of them couldnt even be bothered to get off their chairs
