to think this driver should not be on the road?

I was driving back from taking DS to nursery, and there is very nearly ALWAYS roadworks, so they put up temporary traffic lights.

Just as I was coming up to them they turned red.

I had stopped, but I was STILL overtaken by a car, who blatantly went through the red light.

AIBU to think he should not be on the road?

(I learnt to drive in Australia, where a redlight means stop, so many drivers here go straight through them, do they actually mean "oh if you're in a hurry it's ok to sneak through if you dare".)

I still feel sick...

unfortunately they are the ones that never get caught - the police are too busy clearing up the accidents they leave behind them

Tortington · 17/11/2008 09:40

yeah the roadwork trafic lights are so wank and take so long, that you can get two arctic lorries past before it turns green on the other side.

they shouldn't have overtaken you though

nellynaemates · 17/11/2008 10:02

I'm really sorry custardo, my PMSL at "arctic" lorries

OP, it would piss me off too, he shouldn't be driving if he thinks it's more important to take thirty seconds off his journey than to avoid the risk of a head-on collision.

nellynaemates · 17/11/2008 10:03

I do not know where that extra "my" came from. That'll learn me.

mayorquimby · 17/11/2008 11:51

depends. chances are yanbu and like most people he went through them for the same reason most people break red lights. he was selfish and one of the countless thoughtless people who seem to value their time more than the safety of others on the road.

the only excuse would have been if you had stopped suddenly or if he had already made the mistake of driving too close to you and it would not have been safe/possible for him to stop in time and he had to take evasive action.
somehow i doubt it's the case though

Tortington · 17/11/2008 11:56

pmsl @ self the irony 'articulated'

GrimmaTheNome · 17/11/2008 12:01

YANBU. Clearly he shouldn't have been on the road, he should have been on the pavement to allow free passage for the cars which had begun to rightfully come towards him.

44christmaspuddingsinarow · 17/11/2008 12:05

temporary traffic lights.

For some reason I was told that this type of lights - you are not legaly required to stop not sure if this is an urban myth - or an unknown fact. I am sure it was a judge and policeman who told me this years ago when working a late (illegal)bar one night

UnfortunatelyMe · 17/11/2008 12:06

YANBU.
I was third in a queue to turn right the other day ,across a road of traffic, there was a constant stream of traffic and we were just waiting...the bloke behind me started to nudge his nose out, trying to pull out and skip me an the other 2 cars in front
I wondered where this moron got the idea that HE should go first, and did he think we were all just sitting there for the hell of it????

44christmaspuddingsinarow · 17/11/2008 12:07

ps - YANBU

poppy34 · 17/11/2008 12:08

yanbu -and while we're about it - what is with all the peopel on mobile phones? I thoguht that this was an offence these days (particular bitter point as my mil was run into by some pillock on his phone whilst she was waiting at a junction - it doesnt do an elderly woman with osteoporosis much good to have some twerp who is too busy texting rear end her )

wotulookinat · 17/11/2008 12:26

YANBU. I was so shocked when I moved from London to Yorkshire last year: up here it seems to be the norm for 2 or three cars to go through after the light has gone red - and I mean blatantly go through, not sneaking through. If anyone was raring to go in the other direction as soon as their light turned green, they would crash. It's really dangerous.
And why do some people not know what indicators are?

cupsoftea · 17/11/2008 12:27

Had a car going the wrong way down a narrow one way street this weekend - going very fast. He just continued to pass m by driving on the pavement. Shocking.

wotulookinat · 17/11/2008 12:29
Shock
chequersandchess · 17/11/2008 12:32

Yeah, this sort of thing annoys me. I was behind a slow driver recently on a no overtaking stretch of road and the penis driver behind me decided to overtake both of us. Very lucky there was no one coming the other way.

junkcollector · 17/11/2008 12:42

Some people are really STUPID.

I was in the car with a friend the other week at some road works. She went through on green but some stupid van came out of a side road and started doing a three point turn in the road. By the time he had finished the lights had turned red and a bus had come through. Friend and bus were head to head with no room to get past, cars had appeared behind friend and bus, much head scratching and gesturing.

Suddenly this car full of young men pulls out from behind the bus, drives on the pavement right past a bus stop (luckily no one standing there) and stops at our car (still on the pavement on the wrong side of the road). I have the window down and the young guy in the car leans out and says really patronisingly 'That's how you do it ladeezz' and all the other young men guffaw. They set off again on the pavement as they can't get onto the road cos of cars.

A bit further along he slowly realises he won't actually get past on the pavement cos there is a lamp post in the way. Cos he's young and has his pride to keep, the bloke doesn't stop but squeezes between wall and lampost denting and scratching his car along it's side.

Haven't had such a good laugh in ages, what an arse!

cupsoftea · 17/11/2008 13:00

goodness junk collector - it brings a simpsons episode to mind when Homer continues to drive his car even though it's wrecked

Portofino · 17/11/2008 13:01

I pulled up at a red light the other night. The light for turning left was still green. A guy pulled up next to me (in the turn left lane) beeps his horn, winds his window down and starts shouting rude things at me whilst gesturing to the lights. (stopping anyone else who actually wanted to turn left) I pointed at the straight ahead light - which was still red. He then realised that he was being stupid and pulled forward in front of me onto the main road!!! unfortunately Luckily no one hit him! I took great delight in beeping him to get out of the bloody way when the lights changed.

cupsoftea · 17/11/2008 13:02

Gosh porto - some people are crazy

poppy34 · 17/11/2008 14:12

junk your story did make me laugh - serves the arses right

wotulookinat · 17/11/2008 15:35

Junk that is hilarious!
Porto, what an arse that bloke must be - glad you had the last laugh.
