...to be pissed off at this comment from a 'friend'

She peered closely at me yesterday and asked what moisturiser I used. When I said Simple, she laughed and said anyone over 40 needs to step up a gear and pay for proper lotions .

DH thinks I'm misreading her and over-reacting but it has really pissed me off. she obviously thinks I'm a wrinkly old bag who needs advice.

I've never really used moisturiser and always used to be taken for 8 years younger than I am, although not so much since I had ds and my hair's beginning to look a bit grey. But someone last year said she would have guessed I was the same age as her (about 32, actually then 38).

But years ago someone commented how young my mum looked and I had no idea what they were on about (she had me at 25 and other kids in her 30s so was probably quite average aged mum), now I think she looks very young for 64.

My sister's had problems buying alcohol in the supermarket in her mid 20s, and our aunt was given half fare on a bus at 30, so I'm going to dye my hair and hope I can carry on the family tradition.

Oh, and no, your friend's being unreasonable and I'd be suspicious of her motives.

LittleBella · 16/11/2008 23:02

Has she started to work as an Avon rep or something?

BTW, some doctors recommend not using any skin cream containing retinol/Retin-A etc. during pregnancy. Also to avoid any products containing salicylic acid (many cleansers, acne creams and wart treatments contain this ingredient). If you have sensitive skin, salicylic acid (key ingredient in Clinique Turnaround Cream, for instance) is something to look out for - it brings me out in blisters. Expensive creams are generally not the innocently nurturing products that the adverts would have us believe.

Vitamin A is very bad in pregnancy, I took a pure Vit A drug to clear up acne and they made it clear if I got pregnant whilst taking it I would have to abort the damage would be so awful.

Not quite 40 yet, still use "basic stuff" too and I do not think it is going to change in the next.....year.
I had a similar comment from a "friend" trying to flog me some "Mary Kay" pruducts that where "the very best on the market" but I had never heard of. I suspect LittleBella might be right...

A friend who is a beauty therapist said that a lot of her clients who have bad skin (broken capilliaries, etc) used to use Clinique and she recommended they stop using it cause it's too harsh.

DaphneMoon · 17/11/2008 13:12

I use soap and water and a combination of Clinique dramtically different moisteriser and Boots No7 Protect and perfect eye cream. I don't use Clinique cleanser etc so can't comment whether it is too harsh. I wouldn't say that about the cream though it is oil free so good for oily skin and non perfumed. I find it very gentle and have been using it for years. I am 43 and easily pass for mid thirties which I am told regularly. I think how you treat your skin whilst you are applying the creams has a lot to do with it. It makes me cringe when I see woman stretching their skin around the eyes. I never do that and never rub my eyes, it definitely makes a difference IMO.

rebelmum1 · 17/11/2008 13:20

What nonsense! I use a simple rose moisturiser from weleda, can't beat mother nature!

missyhissey · 17/11/2008 14:42

Daphne, would you recommend buying the protect and perfect eye cream? Saw this at the weekend and was thinking about trying it.

DaphneMoon · 18/11/2008 13:19

Only just seen your question Missy. Yes I would recommend it. I recently had my vision corrected and the eye drops I felt thinned my skin under the eyes. I started to use protect and perfect and I am sure it has thickened it up again and looks normal again.
