to want more than a refund after the karaoke failed to work on the massive family party I organised?

Family, friends and their children came from near and far for this party. I put loads of effort into making it really special.

The food was fab, the guests were great. lovely wine and plenty of it... we hadn't bothered to sort out music though because we hired a karaoke system from a proper DJ shop for £75.

Poor dh, and around six other guests, tried their best to get the thing to work. There were no instructions and it didn't hang together. They were at it for well over an hour then had to give up.

Anyway much time was wasted by many. It marred an otherwise really great party and I'm very annoyed. I lugged the big heavy machine back today and the shop man confirmed they hadn't given us the right leads and no instruction book.

I got a refund .... but it's not enough. I'm very fucked off. I want a good will gesture and I think they should let me have it for another party at no charge.

Sounds reasonable to me.

That;s nice dilemma. I would hope to get some sort of good will gesture because I think both sides would feel better in the end.

Yes, you should get more, but legally the fact that you walked away "happy" with a refund might prejudice any further claim. It's like consequential damages, there was lack of enjoyment as a direct result of them failing to provide you with a working machine. I would certainly go back and ask them to let you have it another evening for free - like all these things though it's basically a matter of negotiation.

Shame I missed the party

a good shop expecting return custom would have done this, but they have no legal obligation to do so.so it would be at their discretion

Yes Sunny. You were missed.

Luckily I did inform the boy behind the counter that I wasn't satisfied and said a good will gesture was in order. He told me I'd have to talk to the manager.

So I'll email him, then move on either way. At least I won't feel like a complete push-over.
