Title probably says it all - just back from holidays and the secondary school is told it has an Ofsted inspection later that week. DS 2 comes home and reports they were allowed to watch Simpsons DVD during a lesson for above reason. Apparently teacher is quite newly qualified but thats no excuse right?

The simpsons! Not even something educational?

combustiblelemon · 13/11/2008 17:17

Which episode?

ScummyMummy · 13/11/2008 17:20

A tad ott of you, imo.
what lesson was it anyway? The Simsons could potentially be quite good for citizenship, art, history, RE, English, geography among others and depending on the episode...

CrushWithEyeliner · 13/11/2008 17:22

OMG you reported it? woh people like you are really quick off the mark aren't you?

stuffitllama · 13/11/2008 17:22

ignore them all

yanbu

too tired but really, yanbu, but the head won't care

nell12 · 13/11/2008 17:25

A newly qualified teacher needing some time to prepare for OFSTED??

Shocking

Its a one off, let it go... the poor teacher has enough on his/her plate already

I can guarantee you that the lessons your ds has during OFSTED will more than make up for a lesson in front of the telly as all the teachers will be pulling all the stops out

ramonaquimby · 13/11/2008 17:25

agree, very ott
what are you expecting head to do about it? prob lots of videos and dvds going on throughout the school!

pingping · 13/11/2008 17:27

YABU to report her. It was a one off we used to get a video day at Christmas I bet the poor teacher is shitting herself about the ofstead and is now going to get into trouble.

Whizzz · 13/11/2008 17:28

My first thought was it was probably the head teacher that had told the teachers to 'prepare' !!

(we actually do use the Simpsons as eductational in some lessons - a great wasy to engage the kids!)

Ineedmorechocolatenow · 13/11/2008 17:28

Um... I'm a teacher and I have been known to show the odd video or ten. I do teach English (so they're usually adaptations of books we've been studying, or for writing a film review) I also teach Media Studies (so it's part of the territory).

I wouldn't have shown The Simpsons (unless it was Media and we were looking at the representation of the family) and if I did, I certainly wouldn't have been so vocal as to actually tell the kids why they were watching the video!

I do, however, think it's unreasonable to be so quick off the mark to complain. If you have no other issues with this teacher, then I would put it down to the stress of Ofsted. It's really horrible and stressful and we've all been known to act out of character under those kind of conditions....

imnotmamagbutshelovesme · 13/11/2008 17:31

MY DD is 5 and insisted all they did yesterday was dot to dots!

QueenofAllWildThings · 13/11/2008 17:31

Hmmm... I'd be happier if it was something a tad more educational. We used to watch Blackadder at school (admittedly secondary) when the teacher had something urgent to do.

stuffitllama · 13/11/2008 17:32

I bet it's not a one -off

dvds are a substitute for many lessons

Mine had to watch Dad's Army during a World War Two module -- tremendously engaging ..less than educational

ScummyMummy · 13/11/2008 17:34

Isn't engaging them part of educating them, stuffit?

I am a secondary English teacher and use both Blackadder (the final WW1 one) and The Simpsons (the Lord Of The Flies episode) in units of work. An Ofsted inspector graded my Simpsons lesson outstanding once, so think what you like about that!

Clearly to just say "Here's a DVD to watch whilst I prepare" was naive of her but I think yabu to report it to the Head, if it's a one off.

Coca · 13/11/2008 17:37

I don't see the relevance to her being newly qualified. One dvdis not going to ruin the dcs' entire education.

llareggub · 13/11/2008 17:38

I watched Grease for 2 years instead of being taught welsh. I've no idea why the "teacher" was allowed to get away with it. I'm sure he wouldn't now!

nkf · 13/11/2008 17:38

I once had a tennis mad geography teacher and we watched Wimbledon throughout her summer lessons. Had there been Sky TV then we would no doubt have watched the US and French Open too.

It was daft of the teacher to tell the class and silly of her to put something not even vaguely educational on. But telling the head is a bit much I think.

sagacious · 13/11/2008 17:41

Bit OTT to go to the head if its a one off !

Slightly off topic as my ds is only a year 2 but he's mentioned they've watched a few dvd's in class.Initially I was Mrs Outraged of Buntycupcakeshire, but then I was actually in a lesson (I help out with literacy on a volunteer basis) when a DVD was played. (B.F.G) The children are ploughing through the Dahl books and watched 20 mins, with the teacher stopping and asking questions about what was happening, then all the children had to draw a picture of their best dream and write what it was all about. I was very impressed and wouldn't do a about it again

stuffitllama · 13/11/2008 17:41

it's madness

quite different from watching pogle's wood when it was too sleety to play out in clogs
