DS (nearly 11mo) has conjunctivitis so has been off nursery all week.
DH and I don't have many holidays left, so we've shared care this week. I'm supposed to be back to work tomorrow, and DH will be looking after him - he also took Wednesday off to take care of him.
Thing is, he has decided to take DS to see his dps. Which is fine, as they are lovely and totally dote on him but they are quite a long way off.
He'll be setting off at around 10 to get there for about 11.30ish (which is fine, as that is roughly ds's nap time) but he won't be setting off back until 4.30, as the plan is to meet his dss's mum and pick dss up and bring him back here, which means he won't be home until at least 6.30ish (barring any traffic snarl ups on the M62/A1!!), half an hour before ds's normal bedtime.
My main concern is that it is a long time without milk - he is bf and will not under any circumstances drink milk from a bottle or cup - he'll only drink water from a cup.
When I am working and he is at nursery, he goes 9 hours between feeds, he'll potentially be going nearly 12 hours between feed.
On top of that he has been off-colour this week due to the conjunctivitis (though that has just about cleared up now) and we have had some seriously shitty nights with him, the worst being last night. Which leads to my other concern that he'll be either asleep in the car on the way back and be unbelievably unsettled when he gets home so we will have an even worse night or he'll be seriously cranky in the car - DSS will be in the back with him but he is only 7yo so can't be expected to try and keep him calm. And we'll still have a shitty night!
DH is dead keen to do this, FIL is having some problems with his PC and DH has offered to come over and fix it.
Please tell me I'm worrying over nothing...

um i can understand your concerns, could dh set off a little bit earlier?

glaskhamhasoneintheoven · 13/11/2008 17:10

its not a regular thing, and it'll be nice for your DH to spend the day with him. Just make sure he's aware that if DS is unsettled at nightime due to sleeping in the car etc then it'll be him dealing with it!!

J2O · 13/11/2008 17:11

oh just seen that he can't, well, imo if your DH wants to it then let him, it is quite a long time to go without milk, but as a one off i should think it'll be fine

VinegarTits · 13/11/2008 17:14

He will probably be fine, and he can have a nice long fed when he gets home, if you are worried can your dh set off a bit earlier?

MadMarg · 13/11/2008 17:14

Well, you're still going to worry, anyway. Just make it clear to him that if DS is unsettled that night, then its your DH's responsibility to look after him. Who knows, such a long stretch might make your DS actually take some breastmilk from a bottle or a sippy cup.

imnotmamagbutshelovesme · 13/11/2008 17:15

It sounds like too long a day for an under the weather baby imo.

BouncingTurtle · 13/11/2008 17:23

MadMarg - Ha! No chance! I can't express anymore anyway, have been trying moo juice in a cup and he is not keen!
Notmamag - That's what I'm thinking...
VinegarTits, J2O - no he can't set off any earlier because dss's mum can't meet him earlier as she has to collect him from school and get his gear ready.
And yes it'll be me getting the thin edge of the wedge during the night!

I think I'm going to say sod it and take the say off, boss won't be happy but I don't really give a toss.

I totally understand where you're coming from BUT I have to say that if your DH is looking after DS then you have to let him do whatever it is that he has planned and just remember that it's a one-off.
I was ill a few weeks ago and DH left work a little earlier to pick up DS up from nursery and said that he'd sort out his dinner and bedtime etc which was brilliant of him to even think of that, let alone offer to sort it However, it meant that DS didn't eat until after 7pm....he had take away chinese....didn't go to bed until after 10pm and not in his bed...DH allowed him to stay up and he fell asleep on the sofa!! I really had to bite my tongue and stay in bed but at least DH sorted him out as promised and of course(!) no harm came to DS

FairLadyRantALot · 13/11/2008 17:37

OP....can understand where you are coming from...but it would probably be just fine....

imnotmamag.....conjunctivities is hardly something that makes you unwell/under the weather (at least once over it....as Op's Baby is)

imnotmamagbutshelovesme · 13/11/2008 17:41

"he has been off-colour"

FairLadyRantALot · 13/11/2008 17:44

yes, off colour due to conjunctivites...which is gone now....

Maybe it's just my Kids that were never to bothered about having conjunctivities.....they would have dodgy eyes, but, unless the conjunctivities was due to them having a terrible cold, they would be fine....

imnotmamagbutshelovesme · 13/11/2008 17:46

DOO,TA.

BouncingTurtle · 13/11/2008 17:46

He is cutting another tooth atm, which is what I think he is making him off colour.

FairLadyRantALot · 13/11/2008 17:47

DOO, TA ??????sorry....don't know what ya mean there....

imnotmamagbutshelovesme · 13/11/2008 17:49

difference of opinion, that's all.

FairLadyRantALot · 13/11/2008 17:51

oh right....get ya

glaskhamhasoneintheoven · 13/11/2008 17:54

send him with teething powder, bonjela, whatever you use...

our DC's both had conjunctivitis and we had to travel 4.5hrs to attend a family party, stay 2 nights in a hotel where it took ages for DC's to get to sleep (strange places and all that) spend the daytime at family's houses and all was well in the end, DC's had a great time despite having to be pinned down 3x a day for drops etc, enjoyed the party and we didn't leave till 11pm...

It was a one off!! It didn't harm them and we still got to do what we'd planned.
