to have reported her to the police?

Yesterday I was walking home from the library about 5pm with my DD in her pram.

Crossing at the green light pedestrian crossing a car comes towards us. I step back and it continues, the driver was oblivious.

Now this might be complicated but the car didn't go through a red light. What it did was to turn left (on green lights) at a busy junction with a big no left turn sign (I live near it so am familiar with it). Because its a no left turn the pedestrian crossing is synchronised to come on and let pedestrians across.

I reported it to the police with her regitration number. She was only young, in her 30's or so.

I doubt anything will come of it but then felt bad that maybe she was lost or didnt realise.

The thing is, we were fine because I saw her coming her and stepped back but it could have been awful? And what if its something she does every day to avoid a few minutes of a queue or a U-turn.

Anyone its done now, I reported it but would you have done?

You should have. It's her responsibility to look where she's going. I know what you mean about no red light, but she needs telling because that's just as dangerous.

What they might do is set up a police check at the lights to catch people doing this. Between the tube station and my old office there was a junction like this that had no left turn but people often did and it meant they went through a green man crossing. The police used to stand down the road a bit and pull over all the cars who did an illegal left turn. They probably did it two or three times a year but that was enough to really cut down the number of incidences.

hippipotami · 12/11/2008 19:30

If she turned left through a 'no left turn' sign, then she is not reading the road properly.
And what she did is just as dangerous as driving through a red light. As you say, because there is no left turn the straight ahead lights are synchronised with the pedestrian crossing. So it is a dangerous situation.

You were right to report it. She needs to be made aware and to be reminded to pay attention whilst driving.

oh good. I think if it were just me (rather than with a pram) I would probably just have sworn at her and tried to forget about it but am now thinking "what if it was an old person crossing, what if it happens again" etc etc

We had a junction like this near us in London and it terrified me. Loads of people would make illegal turns and I ended up reporting a few. I'm still really that they haven't put a camera on that part of the junction to catch every single one.

I have a junction to cross that one of the lights only change to red if there is someone wanting to cross.
I have lost count of the amount of cars that have carried on through the red light

A no left turn sign is the same as a red light. I watched someone jump a red light last week which scared the old lady crossing the road so much she dropped her stick into the road. I had to get out and help her get it and make sure she was OK and across safely. By that time the lights had gone green and I got sworn at for holding up the traffic

Was she prettier than you?

mookickkick · 12/11/2008 21:21

Well done! I regret not having reported the twat man who tried to pass a bus by using the bike lane and didn't notice that there was a green pedestrian light. I was pushing the pram at the time and had to stop, while the driver slammed on the brakes. I leaned over and told him he had a red light, to which he told me to F-off. Classy.

pamelat · 13/11/2008 09:22

MumtoJaydenandArmani, thats impossible I'm afraid

No, she was very normal in an old car.
It was the more the fact that she could have killed someone.

YANBU. Your action might prevent a kiddie or OAP from being killed. Thanks for taking the time to do this.
