to think asda could have turned the music OFF

When I was shopping in asda this morning, they announced over the tannoy that there would be 2 minutes silence to remember the fallen, which is right, and expected, but they failed to turn off the music, so it was blaring away while we all stopped to remember. I thought it was so sad, and spoiled it, but didn't complain, whats the point? I just wanted to rant....

I did have a moan to other customers as we were all amazed at the insensitivity of it,but would the staff/manager have cared????

Yes I think they would of but its pointless complaining now.

I work in an office and people were on the phone to customers during the silence

I was in Debenhams yesterday and they did exactly the same thing! So disrespectful!
You would think someone would have thought about it.

My next door neighbour, who ive known for 28 years, was killed in Iraq last year, so i think about him in particular and i know it sounds daft, but i felt like they were being disrespectful to him! I know they weren't but you know what i mean...

I doubt there was a decision taken to leave the music on, I am sure it was overlooked. Managers and staff are folk just like us and would have definately cared.

i was in john lewis cafe yesterday when th 2 minute silence was on, everyone stood up and was quiet and respectful, the only noise that could be heard was dd (2.8) shouting quick mummy letsw hide under the table sand then when i ignored her kept repeatign mummy stop noring me! was very even thoguh she is too young to have done it disrespectfully. i did ask her to be quiet but that made her even worse.

santapaws · 12/11/2008 09:31

ATTWT, I dont think ayone would have found that disrespectful, it would made me smile anyway. Children are children and dont have a sense of occasion, whereas addults do, or should, and should've realised! x

mayorquimby · 12/11/2008 11:29

honest mistake i'd imagine.
it's background music, so by it's very nature it's meant to be heard but not really heard ifyswim. they probably just never thougt of it and then got caught in the situation of being to embarressed to be the one running around the shoop to turn the music off during the suppossed 2 minutes silence

DaphneMoon · 12/11/2008 12:13

They should have planned it better, surely someone should have realised. The person making the announcement over the tannoy must be somewhere near the music on/off switch! They turn it down to make their stupid announcements don't they?

chickydee · 12/11/2008 12:33

mayorquimby, in our asda it's definately NOT background music lol, it's so bleeding loud sometimes I cant concentrate.
Anyway, glad it'sm not just me,i felt so very sad at the time.....
