To think that council employees shouldn't go on strike.

Maybe I am, and there is a good solid reason to them doing so, please tell me if so, but....

At the weekend DH has been doing some major DIY, filled his car yesterday and went to the tip, was closed due to 'industrial action' DH was flippin mad, I tell you!!!

Shouldn't they be bloody grateful for a job in the current climate? And if they are picketing for a pay rise, then that will just make our Council Tax higher..

YABU, my hubby works for the council(scotland) and I support him striking. Its NOT about being ungrateful for a job. In my line of work and at my husbands old place of work we used to get a wage rise every year inline with inflation, but he doesnt get this at the council, hence why they are striking! Yes its an inconvience, but thats the whole point of a strike.

2shoes · 10/11/2008 15:29

yanbu they should work for free. just to keep your council tax lower

MeAndB · 10/11/2008 15:30

Oh and about council tax, scottish councils have money in banks in iceland so it just proves they can afford the pay rise for its employes.

JODIEhadababy · 10/11/2008 15:49

OK point taken I suppose when we are really struggling to pay bills it just gets you cross, but I take you point about inflation and am now truly sorry that the air was blue in our house yesterday!

Council workers have to pay rising bills too, you know. And for many essential spending (roof over head, utitilies, food, council tax, childcare) makes up a huge proportion of disposable income and many of my colleagues at a council struggle to pay rising bills too.

KatieScarlett2833 · 10/11/2008 16:14

Did you know that the only reason some of our local council employees got a pay rise recently was because the minimum wage went up in October? How much do you think that these people are struggling to pay bills?

VinegarTits · 10/11/2008 16:16

YABU

lizziemun · 10/11/2008 16:17

stirfry · 10/11/2008 16:19

yabu

Mercy · 10/11/2008 16:19

What elkiedee said.

Over the years I've come across all kinds of strange views about council employees.

ilovemydogandPresidentObama · 10/11/2008 16:24

Are you against industrial action, or just council employees taking industrial action?

saltire · 10/11/2008 16:25

At least they can strike, DH can't

JODIEhadababy · 10/11/2008 16:37

Ilovemydog... I suppose Industrial action, I don't get a pay rise and DH doesn't either, and we'd probably lose our jobs if we did.

I suppose when I started this thread I was just ranting, and wanting to find out what other people views were.

Military saltire?

JODIEhadababy · 10/11/2008 16:38

Just read that back sorry what I meant to say was we'd probably lose our jobs if we did strike, there are many people who could replace us.

compo · 10/11/2008 16:40

I work for the council
I pay my council tax just the same as you so if it goes up it hits me as well
Our pay rises never amount to much, once we only got 1.95%

compo · 10/11/2008 16:42

by pay rise I mean the annual rate of inflation, surely you and your dh get that?

KatieScarlett2833 · 10/11/2008 16:44

MY DH can't strike either but it doesn't mean I don't support other peoples right to strike.

Especially those who are extremely underpaid.

serenity · 10/11/2008 16:45

YABU, for all the reasons people have said.

JODIEhadababy · 10/11/2008 16:47

Hands are considered well and truly slapped

OP posts:
ilovemydogandPresidentObama · 10/11/2008 16:47

There are very limited circumstances where an employee would lose their job solely based on their participation in a union balloted strike.

I find industrial action irritating sometimes, but would much prefer people exercising their right to do so rather than the alternative where workers have no rights.

KatieScarlett2833 · 10/11/2008 16:48

Exactly ilovemydog "Power to the People"!

poshwellies · 10/11/2008 17:01

My dh works for County Council-unless you are upper management, the wages are fucking shocking-YABU.We are struggling.

babyignoramus · 10/11/2008 17:47

I work for the council - I would say my wages are fair for what I do - but every year they get a little less fair as the rise is always lower than inflation. Then when we argue about it the powers that be always draw it out for as long as possible - so the council is actually making money on the interest until they finally agree and we get our back pay.

hecate · 10/11/2008 17:51

everyone should have the right to withdraw their labour.

Otherwise they tend to call it slavery....
