Am I the worst mum in the world? DC are 7 and 9. They watched DVD's until I got up at 10.

Its not like i had a late night either, was asleep by 10 but was just so desperately tired.

You are teaching them how to handle their time independantly without an an adult around - invaluable!

PatienceRequired · 09/11/2008 12:21

Sounds like bliss...

DoubleBluff · 09/11/2008 12:22

Dont we all do it once in a while?

Tinkywinks · 09/11/2008 12:37

I think YABU to think that it might be in any way unreasonable. To me it sounds more like you are saying "AIBU because normally I'm such a wonderful home baking craft making activity creating mother". Go back to bed.

I think there is a thread like this every single weekend.

You must know YANBU so why do you need a parenting forum to confirm this?

Nemowith3and1tobe · 09/11/2008 13:05

LackaDAISYcal · 09/11/2008 13:18

Of course not; appreciate it while you can

We used to be able to do that until DD came along 17 months ago........Can't wait till she and her new baby brother are old enough to be left with DS so we can do it again.

these 6:30 starts are killing us.

""To me it sounds more like you are saying "AIBU because normally I'm such a wonderful home baking craft making activity creating mother""

Not at all tinkywink, In fact I am probably the complete opposite, but have a friend who is very much like that.

She phoned just after 10 this moring and was really surprised to find that I had only just got up. She said "what about the kids" as though I had been really neglectful, and then me, being Mrs paranoid, starts worrying that I am indeed doing something wrong.

It had never really occured to be before that there was anything wrong with doing this.

This reminds me of recently when talking to a really nice level headed non-competitive mum at school and I said that we get up at 8.45/9ish at weekend and let dcs play downstairs while we are in bed (do actually feel a bit guilty as they get up at 6.10 or so every day - sob - so technically they could have been playing alone for nearly 3 hours by that time) and she said "Really?! If I did that I would think I was SO lazy. Ds has a swimming lesson at 8.30am every Saturday". I felt really awful but my rational head says they are big enough (8 and nearly 6) to do this and I could not survive the day if got up at 6.10 unnecessarily. (hence nickname BTW)

Yeah well, I chauffeur my DS everwhere during the week. Swimming Lessons 8.30 on a saturday, forget it. It's my lie in day. I love it when they get to that age where they can drag their own cereal out of the cupboard, along with setting up the DVD player.

StickLadyLove · 09/11/2008 18:37

You are not being unreasonable at all. You'll be a better mother if you are rested!

Slightly different scenario, but I was really poorly last week and put DD aged 3.9 in front of a DVD. DS was napping. I lay down on the bed upstairs for an hour otherwise I don't kow how I would have got through the day. I felt safe doing it as our house is small and she was only really a few metres away from me.
