To be quite offended by the secretary at school

...who yesterday sought me out in the playground, and in front of everyone said very loudly, 'The name on your utility bill was wrong'.

I said 'Sorry?' and she said, 'Instead of Ms F M [surname] it says Ms M [surname].

what would you like to do?'

I said 'My middle initial is M. thay have just missed off the F. I'll find another bill'.

She said 'Well it's not really a bill anyway is it?' and I said, 'No, I'm afraid I don't have any bills as we pay by direct debit, I thought a lot of people did' (by this time really, really embarrassed and blushing - everyone can hear her)

and she marches off back indoors, turning to shout over her shoulder, as a parting shot,

'Well, you're here now...'

I think she was trying to imply that I had falsified my address, when in fact the place was offered to me at my old address anyway, which is nearer the school, and I could have let them think I still lived there if I had thought it was necessary to fulfil their criteria - as it was, the place came up mid term and we were asked to fill it.

I can't believe her attitude and was so, so embarrassed. Like it isn't hard enough to fit in
It's only our first week...

(I followed her in and offered her my driving license as proof, which she took and scrutinised saying 'Have we had this?' and I said no, I was asked for his birth certificate and a proof of address' and she said 'It has to be a utility bill' and I said I would see what I could find.

AIBU - I was actually really upset about it and went home feeling very persona non grata there.

I had issues with a secretary in the school the children used to go to....she refused to send some records to the LEA about DD2 (I was then fighting to get her DX'd with dylexia)......she was all 'they are our records and nothing to do with you or your DD'.

ooooh...........I saw red and wrote a letter of complaint.

My fave line....

"she has an over-inflated sense of self-importance!"

you may use it if you wish in your letter...

Fllightthebluetouchpaper · 07/11/2008 15:53

Thanks Psycho, I have bookmarked that

I hope you got the records in the end? That really sucks.

oh, and complaint was taken seriously BTW, she was actually complained about by several other parents!

psychomum5 · 07/11/2008 15:59

it actually took three years to get the records, she played hardball and then lied, it wasn;t until the dyslexia teacher in DD2's senior school got involved and also complained tho that we got joy. maybe because she actually worked for the LEA that they finally listened, no idea.

it did hold up the DX...something for which I will never forgive her for, but I will never get an apology. altho, having said that, things have worked out better, so I am happy now that DD2 is getting the proper support......ooh, the LEA did set DD2 up with a tutor to help her catch up tho, so I think that was my apology IYGWIM

she was sacked eventually!

I think we must be soooo lucky to have a nice, kind school secretary.

RustyBear · 07/11/2008 16:14

Well, if I told you some of the things parents have said to office staff at the school I work at, would you say that all parents must be offensive bitches?

Like the one who looked at the picture of the bursar outside the office and said
"That must have been taken a few years ago...."

psychomum5 · 07/11/2008 16:17

oh,all mine are now at schools with wonderful secretaries.......was just this one that I had issue with.

RustyBear · 07/11/2008 16:23

And actually, though I'm not condoning her attitude, which was obviously wrong, querying a different initial isn't being officious at all - if you are Mrs F(surname)your MIL could esily be Mrs M(surname), and using a grandparent's address to get into a school is pretty common (I know of two examples in our school)
But she could have done it in a more tactful way.....

debzmb62 · 07/11/2008 16:26

i,d go to the head to and ask her for a apploigie infact demand one from her (the jumped up sec i mean) tell the head how really hurt and emmbarest you were
hopefully head might put her againset a wall and shoot her !!glad my kids secs are nice btw

Fllightthebluetouchpaper · 07/11/2008 16:46

Rusty, I don't think I said anything suggesting that everyone who works in a school is an offensive bitch

I wouldn't say such a thing, I just meant that I have met this sort of attitude on more than a few occasions and wonder where it comes from.

I understand that they have to check that people live where they say they do. However in the presence of my driving license, which has my photo and address on it, plus a bill that frankly could have come from my mother's house anyway if we shared an initial - I am not sure I take your argument completely on board! I am sure that a lot of parents do fake applications, however I resent being implicitly accused of it. I wouldn't like being accused of stealing or lying about something else eitehr, lots of people do it, it doesn't mean I would.

I do think they probably had to ensure it was correct to avoid the scenario of paperwork being returned by the council though. I just thought her saying 'You're here now anyway' was really out of order. Even if they needed it spelt correctly for the LEA they didn't need to behave as though I was guilty until proven innocent, when I had proof of my address with me for them to see.

RustyBear · 07/11/2008 16:54

Thatt wasn't aimed at you, flight, it was aimed at the 'despots, the lot of them' comment.
I was just pointing out that some school secretaries being despotic doesn't prove they are all like that, any more than some parents being offensive bitches means we all are...

TheMoistWorldOfSeptimusQuench · 07/11/2008 16:54

Sorry if my flippant generalisation offended anyone

TheMoistWorldOfSeptimusQuench · 07/11/2008 16:55

Aplolgies Rusty. Very ill-considered of me.

RustyBear · 07/11/2008 17:03

And I did say I thought her attitude was all wrong, but I still think she was right to check the initial (especially as your OP says she hadn't yet seen your driving licence) and that in itself isn't accusing you of anything, any more than any official check would be.
But obviously she shouldn't have done it in front of other people, or in such a rude manner

RustyBear · 07/11/2008 17:07

That's OK Quench Or should I call you Septimus - or Moist?
Actually, I seem to remember there are are few people on here who really hate the word 'moist', so I'd better not....

TheMoistWorldOfSeptimusQuench · 07/11/2008 17:10

I like moist. But yes, I know I'm in the minority
