I posted on here a few days ago about a video on youtube of a horrible girl beating some other girl up. My sister goes to the same school.

I had 3 choices, report to school, report to police or report to newspaper and try and get her in as much trouble as possible.

Anyway I did all 3 (like some of you suggested). School and police were not interested. Newspaper was and emailed me back asking for more info. By this point I'd regretted involving them so I emailed back and said I had no more info and didn't know any of the kids involved. I thought that would be the end of it but I've just had an email back saying they're running 'the story' tomorow in the paper! what story??? they had no info ... ? What could they possibly be reporting on?

I really regret getting involved.

they will make up bits to fill the gaps

In my experience of the press, even if you had given them all the info you had they would change some of the facts anyway

You have no control of a story once you involve the press. God knows how they'll 'interpret' the story!

MrsTitchmarsh · 05/11/2008 17:50

I saw your thread the other day. First of all I am disgusted that the school and police wern't interested!
The newspaper has probably gone and found other sources, maybe talked to kids at the school etc to build up a story based on the video.

You shouldn't regret getting involved, if everybody turned a blind eye to things like this, what sort of world would we be living in.

WhatFreshelleisthis · 05/11/2008 17:52

Mrs Titchmarsh has said everything I was just going to!
Try not to feel bad - you are trying to help, and shame on the school in particular for not being interested that is unforgivable

MrsSnape · 05/11/2008 17:56

Well its not that they wasn't interested as such but she's already been expelled over something else so I suppose she's nothing to do with them anymore.

Will they identify who gave them the story? my sis is still at the school and I don't want more trouble for her

OP posts:
pinkteddy · 05/11/2008 17:58

did you give your full name? Did you tell them about your sister being at the school?

scaryfucker · 05/11/2008 18:01

I think that is a sad indictment of our society.

The school were not interested.

The police were not interested.

But the newspaper was

< sigh >

MrsSnape · 05/11/2008 18:04

No I only gave my first name and never mentioned my sister. I also asked them NOT to identify me in the story and the reporter did say she wouldn't mention my name at all.

OP posts:
pinkteddy · 05/11/2008 18:08

I dont' think they will then. The reporter will probably want to take all the credit anyway! Well done for reporting it btw. Agree with scary - v sad.

QwertyQueen · 05/11/2008 18:11

dont feel bad!
The school deserves bad publicity if they are not interested in this.
It is not only about punishing the girl who was doing it, but also supporting the poor victim.

Tortington · 05/11/2008 18:14

good.

mobile phones should be banned at school FULL FUCKING STOP.

Liffey · 05/11/2008 18:25

Well done you. Happy slapping is so sickenning it beggars belief.

babymt · 06/11/2008 11:40

I'm fascinated. Did they run the story today then?

Its appauling that the school and police weren't interested. Thats why this stuff carries on happening

wotulookinat · 06/11/2008 11:51

The school wouldn't be interested if the girl is no longer a pupil there. The paper will now give them bad press, probably saying that they won't deal with something when they actually no longer can.

wb · 06/11/2008 12:00

Agree - what should the school do if she is no longer a pupil?

Mumi · 06/11/2008 12:30

There are always similar incidents at my nephew's (now former) school and it takes the local news reporting them for the police to change their minds about getting involved so don't regret it as it may not be forgotten yet.

wotulookinat · 06/11/2008 12:33

That's true, Mumi. I still think it is a bit unfair on the school though. Hopefully the Police will step in.

onthewarpath · 06/11/2008 13:07

at school + police attitude but not surprised at papers. I remember reading your previous OP but am not sure anymore if you mentionned that the girl in question was or not still in the school. If she is not there is in fact not much they can do BUT THE POLICE?????

MrsSnape · 06/11/2008 13:45

Just an update... the story got front page this morning in the news paper. You can read it here:

www.thisishullandeastriding.co.uk/news/Help-identify-happy-slap-victim/article-45409 1-detail/article.html

And part of the video is on there too (not nice to watch however but you may understand why I couldn't just let it drop).

I'm glad I reported it to the paper now because with their involvement, the police have launched an investigation.

I think the paper reported it after they'd taken it themselves.

It's funny because they're taking the credit for informing the police and bringing it up with youtube! still, I'm glad they didn't mention me ... can't be doing with some irrate teen banging on the door.

lol well I think I'd have to say goodbye to my windows for a start!

Or maybe I'd be the next star of youtube getting a kicking lol

(I know its not funny before anyone says it).

OP posts:
onthewarpath · 06/11/2008 14:26

You so did the right thing.
Why was the police not interested when you told them?

solidgoldbrass · 06/11/2008 14:30

Maybe the police weren't interested because they knew it would be almost impossible to get a conviction unless they were able to identify the victim and get the victim to press charges? Because without that, if they identify the assailant she could claim that it was 'jsut pretending' and they can;t prove otherwise.
As to the school, I think they are going to get an unfair slagging, because what can they do to someone who has already been expelled? They will be accused of 'not caring' when they have no sanctions to enforce and no action they can take.
And given the general lousy reporting and mentalist right-wing attitudes of most local papers, I think you might not have done the best thing ever, here.

wotulookinat · 06/11/2008 14:33

Erm...whilst I don't condone violence, I think you have gone a bit OTT. The 'victim' shoved the girl first and is in no way identifiable from the clip - luckily for her.
The 'attacker' in the clip may now go seeking revenge. You may have helped to make a bad situation a lot worse.
