I went into my local (Brighton)Paperchase today and was horrified to find greetings cards emblazoned with the words"fuck,""fucking" and "wanker" in large, bold print.Does anyone else out there find this unacceptable or am I a crusty old fuddy duddy?

No you are not, it makes me cringe. I hate random pointless offensive, unthinking nastiness.

Ronaldinhio · 04/11/2008 23:08

good lord

that must be my local also

were they cards to gee up the sexually inhibited?

moosiemoomoo · 04/11/2008 23:12

I have already sent a very stroppy e mail to the company and am thinking of contacting the press.Would anyone like to support me in this(I'm thinking of a spot on This Morning at least)

exactly cat64. What makes me really angry is that Paperchase stock fun stationary, etc, to encourage children in the stores in the first place.I was told "they are on the high shelves." Do they think children who have attained a reading age are midgets and/or short sighted?

I meant stationery,not stationary.sorry!!I'm going to bed.

get wound up about something important at least, you know the congo or human rights injustices, man's inhumanity to man

fecking cards in a card shop! dont buy, dont look and blindfold any literate offspring

fwiw they are not my choice either and anyone who buys them probably is a wanker but they will die a natural death i would think..

and relax....

combustiblelemon · 04/11/2008 23:58

I really think you're getting a little carried away. If you don't like it, don't shop there. If you want to contact Paperchase and tell them why you're not shopping there, fine, but leave it at that. They might be unpleasant but they're not going to burn your DCs eyes, leave them with emotional scars or turn them into Gordon Ramsey.

YANBU. Went to find an 18th birthday card for my nephew yesterday and they were all tits/beer and generally really gross. And actually, although I'm sure he's not an innocent little angel, DN is a sensitive thoughtful chap who deserves better........

branflake81 · 05/11/2008 07:50

YANBU to think they're tastless and unnecessary - I agree. However, I wouldn't bother complaining. Some people obviously like them, there's clearly a market for them and I think there are more important things to stress about.

morningpaper · 05/11/2008 07:52

interesting article about this here

escape · 05/11/2008 07:53

I swear like a trooper.
In the comfort of my own domain where it may be more appropriate, and never in front of the kids.

I don't want my children saying these words - I do not want high street shops displaying them on their shelves.

It's no different to a row of Dildo's or pornagraphic pictures. IMVHO

AbbeyA · 05/11/2008 07:55

There must be a market or they wouldn't produce them. I don't like 18th Birthday cards-you can't get a humerous one that doesn't involve alcohol. The one joke is that they are going to get legless but that it is now legal. I think card producers need more imagination! However I think there are more important things to get worked up about.

AbbeyA · 05/11/2008 07:58

Sorry humorous.

escape · 05/11/2008 07:59

there is a market - I'm not saying I wouldn't even buy something similar myself.
Do I want my kids deliberately exposed to bad language?
No.

NoBiggy · 05/11/2008 07:59

Isn't it strictly speaking illegal? Something about "likely to cause offense"?

20 years ago teenagers were cautioned for wearing "cool as fuck" t-shirts. These days, I see that sort of thing on the dads at soft play. Luckily I've never taken anyone to soft play who cold read much.

dirtylilminx · 05/11/2008 09:20

To be honest, I work in a card shop, and love nothing more than looking at the rude/offensive cards (btw they are kept separate from the normal every day cards), It keeps me amused ant I think there funny.

onthewarpath · 05/11/2008 09:51

I absolutely loath swearing! On cards or anywhere else. What is funny about bad language? Will you also find it funny if it comes from DC mouth?

MadameCastafiore · 05/11/2008 09:54

Just educate your kids properly that those words are never to be uttered and get wound up about something important.

PuppyMonkey · 05/11/2008 09:57

DP got some cards last year for his mates with a miserable old Santa on, which all said: "Merry Fucking Christmas." I have to say they made me really laugh...

They were from an independent gift shop th0ough, not Clintons Cards or anything...

VinegarTits · 05/11/2008 10:00

PMSL CL, this has got to be the quote of the day for me

AuraofDora · 05/11/2008 11:04

the best thing about inspiral carpets

pingping · 05/11/2008 11:10

LOL CL

OP just don't shop there. I have never seen cards like that but there really must be a big market for them. Espeically in Brighton you find some strange stuff down the.

PuppyMonkey that Christmas card sounds great.

Wonders off thread wondering where I can get a merry fucking christmas card to send to my Mum
