To get irritated when people think my daughter is a boy?

OK so she's only 11 months but when she's sitting in her pushchair wearing a bright pink and red striped hat and a red coat I get really annoyed when people ask 'how old is HE?' or 'isn't HE smiley'. Unreasonable??

Bizarrely (and inexcusably) I have been known to say to my own DD (6 months) - 'Good boy'

I have no idea why.... I even feel embarassed when there is no-one else there, luckily she is too young to take offence.

She gets called 'he' by complete strangers no matter how much pink she is wearing, but I made a decision that I didn't want to buy her only pink clothes as it was so boring so decided to put up with the comments - turns out they get the same comments whatever they are wearing.

DP got mistaken for a woman once, when he had long hair!

DS gets called a girl since we had the laundry incident and his muslins turned pink!

fizzpops - that made me laugh! I always say 'good girl' to my DD when she eats well, but have rarely had occasion to say the same to my DS (they are twins) as he is a very messy and naughty eater. The other day he put his food straight in his mouth, ate, and then said 'good girl' to himself!!! It really made me laugh.

Dd never wears pink and so am used to people assuming she is a boy. Am not bothered in slightest, but some people act as if I have tried to trick them by not putting her in 'girly' clothes.

purpleduck · 07/11/2008 09:48

Used to happen to me all the time with both dc's
dd had no hair
ds had beautiful long curly hair

Anyways, now they are 9 and 6 and they LOVE to hear about how people used to get it wrong. Write a few of the stupider comments down, they will love to hear about it when they are older

My sister used to get people asking her about her lovely little boy, who is actually a lovely little girl, because she had a navy blue pushchair with white spots on it ! Someone said Oh I thought it was a boy because your pushchair is blue! I have yet to see a baby pink or baby blue push chair! Crikey what a thought having to colour code your push chair too. Can you imagine, we can't buy a pushchair till I give birth because we don't know what sex the baby is. Most pushchairs to me seem to be Blue, Green or Red with various patterns etc.

Penona, Bless him, that is so cute.

A lady at school had DS1 and when DD1 came along she would put her in her sons old clothes, why buy new clothes because she was a girl.
She now does have girl clothes and she is 15 months old.

DS gets called agirl all the time, i just smile and say nope he is boy. He does have long curly blonde hair so it is easily done i suppose.

wastingmyeducation · 07/11/2008 11:34

Ripeberry If we had a girl, I wouldn't buy all new clothes, when we've got some lovely stuff for DS. I'd just knit a few pink cardies to go with. Can't see the point in putting an under 6 month in a dress, it'll just ride up.

xx

My DD is always mistaken for a boy, even in her pink polka dot swimming costume!!!
