To be a bit pissed off that having our heating on is a luxury we just can't afford...?

I know we're not the only family in this position, far from it, and I should be grateful that I can at least afford to feed us adequately and keep ds in nursery so I can work, but still.

ARGH - just want to rant really. I'm cold and pissed off! I don't see where else we can economise - we have a condenser boiler but the insulation in this house is a bit shite. Nothing we can do about that as it's rented - but our new house is poorly insulated as well, and bigger so will be even colder. Ah well, i suppose it's character building, or something.

they said they'd do cavity walls but we don't have them but woldn't do windows or roof. I guess if you do live in a house that needs a new boiler or has cavity walls they are pretty good.
Fakeglasses, that is a lovely offer but I didn't have a moan to get money out of poeple! But thankyou for the offer.

FakeGlassesAndTash · 04/11/2008 17:34

I know you didn't! But I'm having a crap day too, so if I can help you, it might cheer us both up. The offer stands.

email me on [email protected] and we'll talk about it.
If you are close to Bristol come visit....but bring warm slippers and several layers

NMC -

My victorian house is freezing. You can stand in front of the windows and doors and feel the wind!

DD1's room is so cold she has started waking during the night and climbing into our bed shivering.

I have oil heating which seems to be costing £300 every 7 weeks and that's just having the heating on for 2 hours per day.

Eon are just having a laugh with the electricity bill!

I noticed on my tenancy agreement is says that I'm not allowed to change suppliers!

scampadoodle · 04/11/2008 17:46

I am very and at some of the posts here. I can afford heating but I still moan about the cold - will try not to in future.
Our house is very badly insulated. The Warmfront people came round but apparently anything built pre-war (or maybe later, can't remember) has solid walls so no cavity insulation.

needmorecoffee · 04/11/2008 17:56

sb6699, someone suggested that plastic clingfilm stuff to put over windows cos my curtains flap back and forth depite windows being closed. When I feel better I will go to B&Q and get some.
The 15 tog duvet has helped as me and dd are snuggled into it with only our noses showing!

NMC - you have mail.

lou031205 · 05/11/2008 09:42

I just phoned warmfront to chase our appointment, and they said that as we privately rent, (we get housing benefit top-up) then we have to be able to prove that our landlord has given up all responsibility to the repair and upkeep of heating equipment to have any work done!!

So although our sole source of heat in the property is one storage heater in the kitchen, if the landlord is responsible for its upkeep in the tenancy agreement, then all they can suggest is cavity wall and loft insulation.

Terrific! Our landlord is hardly going to put in more adequate heating which will cost him, and as he is my uncle (although he has a portfolio of properties so not simply a relative letting to a relative) the rent is about £200 per month below market value, so we couldn't afford to move.

lou031205 · 05/11/2008 09:44

And they are totally unfeeling too. DD1 is being assessed with development delays, and nothing I do can convince her to keep her clothes on. She has blue lips at times, and insists she isn't cold

Just a message for Twinklemegan - I hope you read this! I am in a similar situation to you and it has been comforting to read your posts and know I'm not alone. I live in the same area and am also with Scottish Hydro, and have big old storage heaters in the house, and convector heaters in the bedroom, both of which guzzle electricity and the storage heaters give no return! Total control my a*. Basically wanted to say - I really do understand your anger with that company. I am on thtc as well. Recently received a letter from them informing me of the price rise and saying that they were scrapping the charge for prepayment meters, which i am on. I looked on my meter and the standing charge was still on it. So I called them and they came round to give me a new meter - it appears that my old one was one of a faulty batch which did not allow the remote price rises so it had been at the same price since 2006.

If I had only known that, i would never have let them change it! I could kick myself!! Grrrrrrrr you can imagine. Overnight my bill trebled, despite them scrapping standing charge. am now paying something like £5/£6 per day for a comfortable house - even with all the heaters now switched off it's about £3 a day, and i like you just CANNOT see where it is going. Will let you know if i find a way to change this awful tariff, please let me know if you do! It is so freezing today, my hands can barely type! It's 12 degrees in my sitting room
