YABU!

Mssparkle I too watched the first series when I was 14 and I didnt go out shagging either.

The movie is tame I don't even think the series is that bad.

solidgoldskullonastick · 29/10/2008 09:43

Oh, get over yourself. I haven't seen the film and if it were a DD of mine I would want to make her read The Beauty Myth afterwards, but it's hardly worth making a fuss about. SHe is 13, not 3, and the 'message' of that film is not 'Sex is Great' but the usual consumerist heteromonogamous crap anyway (Happiness is only found in ONe True Love and expensive shoes. Oh, and in being thin). That's the same message she's going to get from shitloads of places, try to counterbalance it if you can.

Or are you one of those people who comes out in hives at the mere mention of S E X anywhere near anyone under 30?

YABVU, are you going to lock her in a cupboard for the next 5 years?
TBH it wouldn't even occur to me to ask another child's parents if my 13 yo had some friends over and they wanted to watch a 15. A film really won't tempt them into underage sex if they weren't intending to "do it" anyway. do you withdraw her from sex ed at school as well?

I was watching porn when I was 13. I blame the hormones.

I remember when the first SATC series come out I was quite shocked. And I don't think that it is appropriate for young children to watch. But the movie was tame, no? I can't seem to remember anything controversial ...

Saturn74 · 29/10/2008 17:09

My nearly 13yo has watched some 15 rated films.

I would check with the parents of his friends before I let them watch one though.

Eniddo · 29/10/2008 17:10

yabu

it is tame (and shit, but that's another story)

Eniddo · 29/10/2008 17:11

there are some juicy bits in the series it has to be said

good old fashioned sex though at least not mind-numbing violence

I wouldnt like a 13 to watch saw (also a 15 iirc)

PenelopePitstops · 29/10/2008 17:12

yabu, shes 13 its not that bad a film

SimpleAsABC · 29/10/2008 17:13

YANBU, there are some 15s I would deem acceptable but that's because I think it depends on the content.

If it were a fifteen due to the level of swearing for example i'd be less bothered (but still annoyed) but what kind of message is sex and the city sending out to a 13y.o?

SimpleAsABC · 29/10/2008 17:14

But i've only seen the series, not the film, which on further reading you guys think is tame!

wabbit · 29/10/2008 17:15

yabu - they'll be talking about far worse than samantha's exploits in the classroom and getting it all wrong and giggling at just how outrageous they can be...

having an open mind yourself will lead your daughter to understand her sexuality - and yes - at 13 she has got her own budding sexual identity

understanding herself will lead her to make conscious, responsible decisions about sex.

Eniddo · 29/10/2008 17:15

I'd rather my 13 year old saw a cock than someone having their arm cut off

stillstanding · 29/10/2008 17:15

I would be uncomfortable with my 13yo watching the series. I really do remember watching the first series and being quite shocked, particularly one scene where they are in the back of a taxi talking about anal sex and they get bumped and they say it's a preview? Absolutely hilarious but not appropriate for young children. And the sex was also (in the series, not at all in the movie) all quite ... casual. Not necessarily the values one wants to expose young girls to imo.

sleepyeyes · 29/10/2008 17:19

Yabu.
Its what teenagers do watch movies that are 15 and 18 rated.
The sex in the city movie doesn't really have anything more explicit than most under 15 movies.

I loved dirty dancing as a young kid never really noticed the sex scenes just loved the music and dancing.
And many other movies that I wasn't supposed to see.

I still had to wait many many years well after I left high school for my first shag.

She is unlikely to be corrupted by the movie, she has probably heard much worse from the easy girls at school.

i would be annoyed tbh

MorrisZapp · 29/10/2008 17:22

I don't think the series or the film is appropriate for 13 yo.

I loved the series, hated the film, but both are rammed with adult and sexual references and there is a very brief but full-on sex scene in the film (Miranda putting her troubles with Steve 'behind her'). Not to mention Samantha and the 'hunk' next door etc. Endless swearing and endless promotion of over-hyped branded goods.

You probably can't stop her watching this kind of thing but you know that anyway.

elmoandella · 29/10/2008 17:23

yanbu - if your annoyed she watched a 15 without friends mother asking you if it was ok.

i wouldn't show a 15 to anyone under without their parents permission

LouMacca · 29/10/2008 17:30

yanbu. i don't think its ok to see this film at 13. i obviously watched a different film than some of the posters on here.

i cannot believe a cinema allowed a 3, 10 and 13 year old in to watch it .

janeite · 29/10/2008 17:34

YANBU. She is 13, not 15 and there is a huge gap between the two ages. I don't like this early-adulthood thing that people seem to think is inevitable; it isn't.

luckylady74 · 29/10/2008 17:46

I'd be cross she'd been allowed to see such tedious materialistic shit, but not about the certificate. My mum took me to see my first 15 when I was 12 and it's a very fond memory of mine.
