ScareyBitchFeast, I sympathize.
This is what I do and it seems to have worked for me. I ask the children to bring home an agenda for the week (everything that is expected that can be done and started M-F) especially if something cannot be done in class (the teachers constantly monitor progress here) and is expected handed in on Friday.
I make the snacks (youngest still gets a snack) and lunches the night before.
Homework time is right after school. Two questions get asked everyday when they get home. 1. Do you have papers that I am to review? 2. Do you have homework?
These are followed by whatever other questions required...subject? what materials are required? etc.
Homework is done in the kitchen right after and nothing else takes place until it is done. I review it.
If something isn't brought home and is expected...costumes, materials for the class, or a project and I'm not aware of it then heads will roll.
I have a 22 year old and he got through school with this practice. It seems to be working for the other two 12 and 10.
I get up at 6am to make sure they get up and get dressed. Clothes are laid out the night before...no exceptions. Bedtime is 8:30pm.
I hope that helps.

I want to know what happened to my little witchy hats on the faces???
In all fairness, you have lives too. Sometimes homework does run late but the understanding is that everything is a tradeoff. You have homework? You want to do it at the last minute? Then you pay the price. Just how it is. Who doesn't have something else more enjoyable to do than homework?
Everyone has to do it so the sooner it is done the better.
Don't let it pile up. If you do it becomes overwhelming.

thanks for that,
problem is dd and dh both slow, arty perfectionist types, unlike me and ds.

luckily dd is keen, but sometimes too keen, which is why they couldn't stop what they were doing.

hard isnt it?

ScareyBitchFeast, Not hard....they sound brilliant. Just remember to spread it around. Most excel in one area...one possibly two only. Everything else is hopefully passing.
Again, who doesn't shine when you are doing something you truly love? It's the tedious stuff that we need to work at.
It will be fine. You just have to not make it a habit.
