to think Tescos are disgraceful and feel sorry for this poor lady

so was in tesco (on a saturday yes suicide i know!) luckily i didnt need too much as they had literally fuck all. NO MILK WATSOEVER!

SO any way a notice a lady with a toddler and a prob about 1 yr old, She was asking a employee if he cld look for some milk for her - he says"we aint got none" she says " thats not good enough, i have milk tokens and you are the only store locally that will accept them" He says "well cant you just Buy milk?" "do you think i'd brave this hell if i could?" he then gives her a look of real disgust, and she blushes.

I just felt sad at the way she was being spoken too, and it must have been embarassing to admit to some trog in tesco who was prob about 17 yrs old that she couldnt affrord to shop elsewhere, plus she shouldnt have to justify herself to a shop there to supply her with goods to buy. I should qualify this by saying:

  • i was already irate at having waited ages in post office.
  • the lady was very polite, even offered to return later if milk would come in, the bloke was just RUDE to her!
  • i did approach a mangager on her behalf

so AIBU to report his behaviour?

YANBU.

he spoke to her very rudely. she may not have wanted to complain herself as it would mean admitting yet again she couldn't afford the milk.

People really do underestimate how crap life on benefits can be. I have recetly stopped recieving milk/veg tokens and i am really noticing the difference.

Penthesileia · 18/10/2008 11:37

YANBU. Kindness & politeness cost nothing. Must admit I'm & & that evil Tesco's have managed to corner the market in milk tokens too.

PillowOfDOOM · 18/10/2008 11:38

No yanbu

Report him! How else can they improve their employees attitudes if they do not know of incidents like this.

Cheeseandseveredfingersarnie · 18/10/2008 11:40

yanbu.report it.lady might not be brave enough to/have time too etc.not on at all!

PavlovtheWitchesCat · 18/10/2008 11:42

YANBU. Except, you should have cuffed him around the head first, told him to learn some effing manners.

BBeingpatient · 18/10/2008 11:46

lol it was tempting! the manager said they would talk to the person in question, there are other shops round here that sell milk but they are loal shops that dont accept the tokens, its really only tesco, and co-op, and as the milk tokens are for a set amount you get most for your money at tesco

YANBU - It may be that the 17 year old has never really experienced the real world and therefore doesn't really comprehend that to come people every single penny counts. Even if he didn't mean it in a malicious way, but rather an ignorant way he's never going to learn the correct way to approach situations like this unless he's called up on it.

So its not so much tesco being disgraceful as a 17yr old assitant who could do with a bit of tact training but 17yrolds arn't very good at that are they.

kiddiz · 18/10/2008 23:53

"....evil Tesco's have managed to corner the market in milk tokens too"
It's hardly Tesco's fault if other shops in the area don't accept milk tokens is it?
I agree with Skramble on this one. I'm not universally defending Tesco by any means but I very much doubt that they train their staff to be rude and offensive to their customers!!

There is only so much training you can give a 17yr old boy that will help him deal with someone demading milk because they have no money to go elsewhere. In an ideal world he would have given her some money to get some elsewhere, in reality his money would have been in his locker and his mum probably buys all his food using his staff discount (if they get one) and he obviously just didn't get it, probably doesn't even know about milk tokens.

BlackEyedDog · 19/10/2008 00:40

How horrid for the lady to be spoken like that. Wouldn't have taken much for the assistant to say 'sorry. no what's out on the shelves is all there is.' I'm sure I could have manged that at 17 yrs old . (or 12 tbh)

nappyaddict · 19/10/2008 00:46

tbf she was a bit unreasonable saying it's not good enough that they haven't got any milk. if they run out they can't do much about it.

Skramble · 19/10/2008 00:57

I do agree 17yr old was an arsehole, who needs to learn a bit of manners and customer care skills, perhaps reporting him willmean he is pulled up and told to improve.

I just objected to the Oh isn't tesco evil sentiment.

Hedge - I have been in supermarkets where I've been told "no sorry totally out" (of milk) I've gone back later - and lo and behold there's more milk - it was just some lazy bugger couldn't be arsed to go and get the rest out when I asked if there was any.....

Had the same with other products too......
