To tell the builder I'm going to Freecycle the scaffold?

Please tell me if I am! DP totally thinks I am and is horrified!

I haven't done it yet BUT I HAVE put an advert in the local free ads in the paper.

Basically we had a new roof put on at the end of last summer. That's Summer 2007. We paid for the job. The scaffold is STILL UP - at the front and back of the house. All year we've asked for it to come down. I can't do the gardening as won't plant anything in anticipation of blokes trampling over the new flowers!

We've asked and texted on the matter repeatedly. I'm sick of it. My view is if they don't want it someone else can.

So...aibu? I'm not, I'm so not!

Do it! I texted our builder to say he needed to coe and pick up the crap he'd left in our garden (scaffolding, equipment etc) or I was putting it in the skip at the end of our road the next day. He collected it the next morning.

I would do the same!!!

Completely don't think you are, and at least if you tell the builder then hopefully he will get his arse in gear and take it down. Hell, sell it on ebay and make some money from it.

IIRR There are laws to do with abandoned property.

I would write to them recorded (keeping a copy) Stating when the scaffold must be collected 14days or similar. Let them know if it isn't collected ater this time you will deem it as your property and dispose of it as you see fit.

I would write to them and tell them that unless they remove it by a particular date you will be disposing of it.

Had a similar problem again with scaffolding, I imagine it's due to the slowdown and a lack of storage space.

dh suggested that as we were now provding storage we would start charging at x amount per day ( I never got as far as prposing this ) But would def send recorded letter saying you will dispose of it in 14 days. Do you have evidence of when you first asked for it to be removed (before they try and saddle you with a bill for the entire length of time) or was it a fixed fee?

I would be very wary of messing with a scaffolder, they have a certain reputation within the building trade and it's not for being sensitive caring people if you know what I mean.

If it is a builder's scaffolding then try the recorded letter route and the storage charge method.

freecycle and say it got nicked. He cannot just store his things at your house for a year!

BTW you might have an insurance issue if someone climbed up it and got in. So I'd get rid.

they came to get it down within 2 hrs of me sending the text. Made them tea and biscuits, lovely.

why didn't I do this one year ago.

My DH who is a Surveyor says never pay in full or they will use you place as a builders yard. Always keep a little bit back and only pay up when everything has been taken away, cleared up and made good.

yes yes Tas1 agree wholeheartedly with your DH. And I will never do so again - the builder has still left a pile of rubble for us to clear. Lesson learnt.

AND in about a weeks time when the advert goes in the paper I'm going to get a billion phone calls from people asking for their FREE SCAFFOLD.
