To have felt patronised by the man in the deli today?

I went into the deli and asked if the feta in their salads was made with pasteurised milk (currently pg). the man said no, it wasn't, and that he obviously wasn't a woman (well, er, no) but that he wouldn't take the risk even with pasteurised feta.

So then when i said something about how come it was all the nice things that we weren't allowed he said 'well maybe it's a good lesson in thinking about something other than ourselves, isn't it?'

Erm......what? [hmmm]

Is it me or was that a bit patronising?

well I think the name of the deli is chndos in Whiteladies road bristol, my brother owns papadli which is round the corner and they are his rivals! I will have to tell him about this...providing I've guessed right?

LittleMyDancingWithTheDevil · 13/10/2008 22:31

wow, does your brother own papa? it's lovely in there!

shall have to try them for my sandwich on Wed, tell him not to patronise his pregnant customers and we'll all be happy !

Yep - that was condescending!

susia · 13/10/2008 22:48

well he kept saying it was fine to eat unpasterised cheese when I was pregnant (as long as it was supermarket ones)- I think. I may have remembered it wrong though. I remember I disagreed with him at the time about it.

ilovemydog · 13/10/2008 22:51

Papadeli is great! Only thing wrong is that one cannot get a pram to the deli side (cheese section)) without knocking down the bread. (although have a double pram....)

susia · 13/10/2008 23:00

papadeli is a great deli but my brother is a selfish twat. sorry I had to add that because he is. probably ok with pregnant women though

MamaHobgoblin · 14/10/2008 12:02

Sounds pretty sanctimonious to me! Pah! to him. Perhaps he has Ishoos?

BTW, it's fine to eat Feta, really. I certainly did! Most supermarket fetas are pasturised and you can even get them made with cows' milk, but pasturised goat cheeses are meant to be fine. Have a look at the Food Standards Agency (governmental) Guidelines: www.eatwell.gov.uk/agesandstages/pregnancy/whenyrpregnant/

I'd have been annoyed. It's easy for men to talk about giving up things but they don't have a clue what it's like to be a mother. We give up more than they ever do.

mabanana · 14/10/2008 12:07

silly arse. And feta is fine. It's a hard cheese, and the food standards agency says it's OK to eat.

stupid comment to you & stupid of him not to know what he's selling as pasteurised is ok.
