to tell ds1 that some kids are just rude?

There is an astonishingly rude little boy at ds1's school. He is four, and ds1 is 5.

They were talking about what toys that have today, wandering around the playground, and ds1 came running over and said "Mum, K said my scooter's crap! Is my scooter crap?"

And I replied (as this has been going on all frigging term) "Ds1, don't use that word, you are a big boy and know better words than that. K has never seen your scooter, it might be the best scooter in the world and he wouldn't know. He says horrible things about your toys because he's rude and spiteful and doesn't know better. Now go and line up, and don't speak to him if he's nasty."

Did I do it wrong?

No idea if it's wrong, but it's pretty much what I've said when children have been rude to my DS, if that's any help.

SmugColditz · 07/10/2008 22:28

I was thinking it.

I was toying with the idea of kicking K's arse while his mother wasn't looking JOKE

Ok this admission will get me hung... it's so common.

I told Ds1 to "Tell K to shut his moth if he's going to say stupid things"

I did say immediately afterwards NOT to say that, but I fear the damage is done and ds1 will be striding around forever yawping "Shet your mahhhhhf!!"

LOL at the cocklogger stage.

That sounds really, really dangerous. And quite Fargo in a Bobbit kind of way.

I wouldn't have said that as i wouldn't want them to think other children were always that way. I would have said something like 'That was a bit rude, hopefully he will say nicer things tomorrow'.

I wouldn't want my own child to get carried away with the idea that if they were rude or naughty that I would label them forever as such.

Truth is an absolute defence

I would have said something along the lines of
'Ignore him, we know your scoooter is great so who cares what X thinks!'

Combustiblelemon · 07/10/2008 23:06

True, there's no such thing as bad children, just bad behaviour.

How about, "That was a bit rude, hopefully he won't act like such a little bastard tomorrow."

lingle · 08/10/2008 14:57

YABU. Combustible's response has a lot more style.
