I didn't realsie they wouldn't do it on a house move, that's bad. I would phone them as see what you can get out of them. Is it a new build?

misdee · 02/10/2008 19:07

nope, not a new build. is older than this place.

I have Sky Plus and don't have a BT line because I live in France, and when we set the box up in the UK we didn't have a BT line either because we have Virgin phone. Just pack up your box when you move and then get someone to set up the minidish if there isn't one already there and it should work straight away, just tell Sky you've moved address in case they need to send new cards etc.

When we activated our card we just had to pay I think £25 extra because they couldn't do it via the Virgin line. Easy peasy.

saralou · 02/10/2008 19:17

misdee, tell them you'll leave if they don't reduce it!!! it's amazing what company's can do!!

my dad phoned virgin as they'd put his bill up by £8 and managed to get it cheaper than it was before!

Misdee

You definitely do NOT need a bt line to get sky+. If you pester them long enough they will agree that it works fine without a bt line. Sone of the advanced features won't work and they can't pester you with nonsense as much but you can def have Sky without BT. We do.

Twelvelegs · 02/10/2008 20:07

We have sky+ but since returning from China (where I spent all summer with no Tv) we have had scaffolding blocking the satelite. My God it's so lovely not to have TV.
DD1 (aged 2) watches the occasional Ballymory on the PC and the boys (5 & 6) may watcha DVD (in bits) at the weekend and play 1 hour of Xbox/Wii a week. The children don;t even ask to watch.....
I am not telling them when it's working again!!
My sister has freeview, that's all you need I reckon.

NotCod · 02/10/2008 20:09

i love it
its fantastic

Twelvelegs · 02/10/2008 20:10

Virgin are shit, I had an ongoing fault for nearly a year where I would lose phone service for anything from an hour to weeks.... they said I had to phone every time it failed or they may not believe me and implied I was just saying it to get my bill reduced. I eventually got through to 'special' complaints in the UK and they reduced my bill and, after 11 months, I have had no further problems.

TheMadHouse · 02/10/2008 20:11

I heart our sky +. we have had it ages and I love it, especially as it means I can watch what I want when I want, fast forward all adverts.

Also the tend to regulate what the children watch via it too

meglet · 02/10/2008 20:12

we have just got a digital box that records stuff. I am in love with it . £80 from Argos this week, think its made by Thompson. It records whole series too.

I like to think i will watch more intelligent tv now, but have just set it to record 'Katie & Peter' .

If we got Sky DP and DD would fight over whether to watch the cricket & footie or music channels. And I'd never get any conversation out of either of them. And they'd stop speaking to each other ever.

Instead, we actually watch very little TV and listen to music and chat instead.

so... NO.

Swedes · 02/10/2008 20:18

We only have terrestrial and freeview channels. Sons and DP listen to R5 Live then watch Match of the Day.

It's fine if you can afford it but silly if you can't. Anyone who has Sky and then says they can only afford Savers bread and tinned peaches is being ridiculous.

MamaG · 02/10/2008 20:19

Mate's dodgy ex used to install Sky.

He said that if you tell Sky you're moving they'll send the engineer out. When he arrives, tell him BT are messing you about with line and you're not connected yet. He'll say "oh ok, this is how you set it up when you DO get your line". Then you just take it to a mate's house with a BT line, plug it in, do the setting thing and then take it back home.

Apparently.

misdee · 02/10/2008 20:21

swedes we can afford it. but not the extra bt line outlay atm. am on hold to sky atm to see what they say.

nothing but hovis here. lol.

Sorry...I love Skyplus. Would happily do without DH for it (only kiddin'...just). YANBU to say you don't need it, but I can see your DH's point of view too.

The way I look at it is I don't drink...I don't smoke...I don't buy nice clothes any more (I worship at the altars of Sainsburys/Tescos for fashion fixes..I'm not even knock, knock, knocking on Evans door any more) and I don't get out much. So I figure the money we pay for Sky Plus is worth every blardy penny.

Have you been with Sky long? Told 'em you're moving and want to cancel cos you can't afford the install? We had a box that died, and we threatened to cancel and suddenly, they didn't want to charge us £100+ to send someone out...they were doing it for free! It's in their interest to keep you as customers. It's not in their interest to drive you away for the sake of a £100 or so...

squilly · 02/10/2008 23:15

Have just reread some threads. Ignore me. I thought Sky were holding you to ransom, but it's BT. The barstewards!!!!

unaccomplishedfattylegalmummy · 02/10/2008 23:19

YABU I couldn't live without my sky+.

LittlePushka · 02/10/2008 23:27

methinks you do need sky+ !

Methinks you could trial it for a month free then decide!

Only fair!

It is great!

Upwind · 03/10/2008 07:32

I can confirm that you can pause live tv with a freeview box, having tried it for the first time after reading this thread

MadameCastafiore · 03/10/2008 07:41

We have sky and don't have it rigged up to a telephone line at all and they have never had a problem with that!
