Me.
And I wouldn't use olive oil in a stir-fry...but I am a pedant in the kitchen.

combustiblelemon · 01/10/2008 17:18

You shouldn't use extra virgin / virgin olive oil to stir-fry

OrmIrian · 01/10/2008 17:19

I didn't know there were measures of virginity with rape-seed oil. I'd love to know how you get to be an extra-virgin.

I think that all the health benefits of olive oil, virginal or otherwise, disippate when heated above a certain temp.

I can tell the difference when it's raw though. Lovely stuff.

Flamesparrow · 01/10/2008 17:21

Sesame oil much nicer in stir fry

Blu · 01/10/2008 17:22

I can definitely tell if a nut oil or sesame oil has been used for a stir-fry - it adds flavour.

Twiglett · 01/10/2008 17:23

oh feckit I actually use a chilli oil in chinese

but can you really tell the difference between olive oil / virgin / extra-virgin .. not the look of the bottle .. but the taste of the food?

OP posts:
Twiglett · 01/10/2008 17:24

I couldn't think of an example

Extra-virgin olive oil (EVOO) comes from cold pressing of the olives, contains no more than 0.8% acidity, and is judged to have a superior taste. Extra-virgin and virgin olive oil may not contain refined oil.

Virgin olive oil has an acidity less than 2%, and is judged to have a good taste.

Pure olive oil. Oils labeled as Pure olive oil or Olive oil are usually a blend of refined and virgin or extra-virgin oil.
Olive oil is a blend of virgin oil and refined oil, of no more than 1.5% acidity. It commonly lacks a strong flavor.

Not ripped off Wiki at all, honest Guv.

Alternatively, extra-virgin might have a silver Purity Ring round the bottle.

Back to the point, yes, I don't have the best palate but I can tell with certain oils. Vegetable and sunflower are pretty easy to pick out, and some like sesame are very easy to spot.

DisasterArea · 01/10/2008 17:43

you know it is probably because either you or the oil is the wrong class.

combustiblelemon · 01/10/2008 17:46

I do think that some people can be a bit poncy about olive oils when they can't actually tell the difference- the same people who make a big deal about the right wine but wouldn't notice the taste difference if you decanted an £8 wine into their £30 bottle.

noonki · 01/10/2008 17:46

lol disasterarea

Carmenere · 01/10/2008 17:47

I was once at a tasting for Italian EVO oils and you can actually taste the difference between which part of the country they come from. Oils from northern Italy are grassy-er and oils from the south are spicier. It is quite interesting, it is to do with the climate and sun exposure ect.
You would only use these oils for salad and dipping though.

Carmenere · 01/10/2008 17:48

And I would like to think that I might be able to tell the difference between an 8 quid bottle of wine and a 30 quid one

zippitippitoes · 01/10/2008 17:48

i didntg know you could get virgin rape seed oil

combustiblelemon · 01/10/2008 17:49

Not class, pretension. I have wine that I like the taste of and wine I don't like the taste of- I judge it on what's in the glass. I know plenty of women who would only drink red wine in a bar, though they much prefer white, because of how they think other people would view them.

lucyellensmum1 · 01/10/2008 17:49

Its the people who dip their breads in olive oil that make me shudder - euuughhh why would you do that?? Ive tried it, its vile.

NotCod · 01/10/2008 17:50

nah
i buy ear wax stuff
no one notices

zippitippitoes · 01/10/2008 17:50

oh i try not to drink red wine because of black mouth syndrome

zippitippitoes · 01/10/2008 17:52

have a vision of twig making small talk over shot glasses of oil

Carmenere · 01/10/2008 17:54

Good red wine doesn't make your teeth black, you need to up your game Zippi

combustiblelemon · 01/10/2008 17:54

Carmenere, I didn't mean that there aren't people who have great palates and can really tell the difference. I just mean that there are people who claim they can but can't and go fore the right label. I admit that I have a row of bottles covering different regions. But I did once decant Sainsbury's own into SILs empty poncey bottle - 'It's the only one that I've found I like, but I've always had expensive tastes'- and she didn't notice.

zippitippitoes · 01/10/2008 17:55

it doesnt come in crates either apparently

Carmenere · 01/10/2008 17:57

lol
