No I will not put the heating on yet....they can in true Famous five style get another blardy layer of clothes on instead of running around half naked!!!

The heating is not going on till November I tell you....tis part of my economy drive

Our heating is on any day I'm cold, regardless of the month! Personally, I'd reather wear a t-shirt and put the heating on than dress like the abominable snowman to keep the heat in. But I'm aware that cold is my real weakness...

bythepowerofgreyskull · 30/09/2008 12:16

we have dressing gowns and slippers here because even when we have the heating on it doesn't warm the kitchen.

Lovely snuggly

ecoworrier · 30/09/2008 12:19

What's wrong with slippers and dressing gowns? Or an extra jumper and socks? Didn't realise that was old-fashioned!

I think people have got out of the habit of dressing appropriately. My yardstick is if it's cold enough outside to need a jumper or coat, you need to be wearing something on top of a t-shirt indoors too. If you're still cold when fully dressed with sufficient layers of jumpers, socks etc (or dressing gown if that's your thing), only then possibly, maybe can you consider putting the heating on!

My brother used to wander round his house wearing only underpants and maybe a t-shirt (t-shirt being a concession to anyone other than immediate family!) - he would then have the heating on full blast and his windows open for ventilation. And he wondered why his gas bills were so high...

We never put our heating on before mid-end October, try to push it to November if we can. Most years we switch the heating off for the summer in April or possibly May if it's a really cool spring. And we never ever have the heating on 'properly' overnight - at most on a frost-free setting if it looks likely to be below freezing point.

mamadiva · 30/09/2008 12:27

I'm 21 so not that old really LOL and my DS is 2YO he always has his dressing gown and slippers on or a hooded top of some sort if it's cold would rather do that than have the heating on TBH.

He loves it and I love mine too we may not look fashionable but we can't afford to have heating on all tthe time so why not?

My mum does it too my 3YO isters run around with their hoodies on saying it's cold whilst me and DS sit bloody fanning ourselves with magazines with our tshirts on

teslagirl · 30/09/2008 14:09

Funny, isn't it? I spent my childhood being told to 'Run around outside if you're cold/Put another jumper on' but now my mother has her heating on pretty much from Sept to June! At Caribbean temperatures. Plus a log fire. You literally cannot breathe in the heavily insulated house, esp if she's overdoing the smoking!

My DSs have hooded over-the-head towelling dressing gowns and I want to get them slippers when I can get us all together in a shop that sells them WITHOUT Spiderman all over them, ie not novelty ones!

bozza · 30/09/2008 14:14

My children both have dressing gowns and slippers. They always have had. They are mainly used when they get ready for bed at a relatives and then bundled in the car and driven home. But sometimes (and DD more than DS) use them at home.

Now I spend hours in my dressing gown and slippers.

MogTheForgetfulCat · 30/09/2008 15:36

YANBU - DS1 is the same. he has v cute dressing gown and slippers, but disdains both and then gets into my lovely warm bed (lots of blankets and a lovely toasty DH ) and puts his icicle feet all over me. Little sod.

Was v cold yesterday (we have all had D&V bug, so not running at full health) and put the heating on - it was far too hot v quickly. So we are back to jumpers and socks, and I sit on the sofa of an evening with a granny blanket over my knees and try to get the dog to lie on my feet.

Oh dear, v old fashioned in our house! I grew up in a house with no central heating so I'm used to layering up. DD has very cute pink fluffy dressing gown and slipper socks that I crocheted (told you I was old fashioned!) for her.

You def can't expect to wander around with a t shirt on in winter! We are usually dressed in wooly socks and jumpers and cuddle up on the sofa in the evening with a blanket. I have even been known to have a blanket thrown around my shoulders in the mornings in true granny-anny style!

My husbands favourite saying is "there is no such thing as bad weather - meerly inappropriate clothing" mind you he does think he's ray mears!

Also helps if you spend alot of time outdoors as this aclimatises you so it feels much warmer when you're indoors!

I will be putting the heating on when I need to wear a hat indoors tho

smallone · 30/09/2008 16:23

I also close all the curtains at dusk to retain the heat. Turn the heater off/down in the kitchen if I'm going to be baking etc.

stoppinattwo · 30/09/2008 18:45

I think you become accustomed to the temperature in your house....I cant stand it when visiting someone, if the central heating is on full blast!!! (although i wouldnt dream of saying anything, it makes me feel very uncomfortable.

I just think that a house that is too warm can be a bugs breeding ground and a huge unnecessary expense in most cases. ( i do realise that there are exceptions and some people do need a warm house) My mother would stop functioning if her heating was off

TBH the DC's arnt complaining as much today but DP has gone to bed in a huff ...he is such a wuss!!!!!

ilovemyghds · 30/09/2008 19:20

I agree with the breeding bugs thing too. I open all of my upstairs windows in the morning (the ones too small or high for DCs to fall/climb out of!) and like the house to feel all fresh and breezy - duvets thrown back etc. I have a paranoia of dust mites and bed bugs.

Am also one who hates going to stiflingly hot houses with heating on full blast.

nappyaddict · 01/10/2008 01:51

i have never ever heard of dressing gowns being old fashioned everyone i know wears them. a few blokes i know think slippers are girly though
