I've just given my bosses the evidence they needed to sack my colleague :-(

I feel awful as she was an ok person and have worked with her for a few years.

Thing is she was doing something wrong, although not harming anyone really, and they needed my confirmation of it.

Feel really bad now, even though I was just telling the truth

if she was warned and STLL did it, then it is her own fault

if she hadn't of done it (whatever it is) then you wouldn't have had to grass her up

nooka · 25/09/2008 16:18

In truth you have only confirmed what they already knew though haven't you. I think that you didn't really have any choice about it, and they may well have asked your other colleagues too. I can understand that you feel bad, but the wrong doing was hers, and if they have gone through the right process, then she has only herself to blame.

Dandelioness · 25/09/2008 16:23

I don't think it sounds like the bosses were getting staff members to SPY on another... The situation seems to be that the OP witnessed her colleague doing something, the bosses suspected the colleage, and asked OP for confirmation. I think you did the right thing, canofworms. If she hadn't done anything wrong and had ignored previous warnings, you wouldn't be in this situation.

Dandelioness · 25/09/2008 16:24

PS: A full investigation in the work place into disciplinary matters DOES usally include interviewing other staff. This just sounds routine as if the bosses are handling this properly by questioning canofworms.

poppy34 · 25/09/2008 16:28

she persists in showing her arse to all and sundry wtih your employers name painted on it saying this counts as marketing?

Tamarto · 25/09/2008 16:34

She persists on having phone sex with her DP in the middle of the office?

jeeez · 25/09/2008 16:37

Canofworms, i was in similar situation as you, one colleague was bullying another, things were said in front of me, disciplinary action was taken against bully i had to give a written statement of what I saw/heard, bully was sacked but re-instated on appeal. I was really close to both colleagues involved but felt i had to tell truth no matter of outcome. Suffice to say bully never spoke to me again and would totally blank me, i couldn't care less.

YOu did the right thing but it's not a nice feeling.

canofworms · 25/09/2008 19:07

Thank you all for being so supportive.

You're right, they didn't ask me to spy, I had just noticed things may not have been right (wasn't actually too sure at the time and didn't know about the formal warning)and I've just confirmed that her excuses are not right.

Don't feel too good but it had to be done

UniversallyChallenged · 25/09/2008 19:55

Ronaldinhio - where the bejeegers do you work ?

marmadukescarlet · 25/09/2008 19:55

I sknew one of my senior collegues who was a good friend was falsifying expenses claims (for quite large amounts) and forging the director's sig, including booking international flights to see fictional clients - which I had to book for him (part of my job), despite knowing.

I asked him to stop and brought it to the attention of a person the same level/grade as him in whom I had great trust, the two were also friends. Sadly the other person did nothing and my friend continued to defraud our employer.

One day, some months later, I was asked to go home at lunchtime as my friend was about to be escorted from the premisis when he returned from lunch and they did not want me to witness it.

I called his mobile and told him they knew and he should return and sort it all out.

He went missing, used an company air ticket to go away for a few days and then was found dead a week later.

I wish I'd gone to the Director with my suspicions before it got out of control and my friend wouln't have backed himself into a corner.

You did the right thing.

EyeballsintheSky · 25/09/2008 19:58

Someone I worked with took the new office digital camera home to play around with. When it came back it seemed they had forgotten to delete the nudey pics of themselves! I am very very fortunate in that I never saw the photos
