To not want to buy DS a 'smart' outfit for a wedding

Am I embarrassingly out of touch to suggest that he could just wear a shirt with dark jeans and trainers that look like shoes?

I don't want to waste money on an outfit that he won't wear again, and it will be hard enough to coax him out of football shirts for one day, let alone trying to get more wear out it another time.

He's 6 btw.

x-posted there beautiful. His school shoes are the velcro Clarks style ones. They look more trainerish than smart trainers. I possibly could polish them up but they'll still look rubbish I think.

I'll have a look in BHS. Thanks

Chipmonkey. X-p is the best man at the wedding and he hasn't even written his speech yet . He seems to think that he can talk for 5 minutes off the cuff with just a few handwritten notes, and believe me he is not the type of bloke who'll be able to pull it off. I'll make sure that he does reimburse me, but honestly I don't think he's done it on purpose. He's just crap at organisation.

If you are near a primark they do half decent dark coloured cord trousers there.
Shame my boys are only 3 and 2 I would happily post you a pair of trousers and smart shirt to borrow for the day if we had anything to fit a 6 year old.

PrimroseHall · 24/09/2008 22:46

Flibbertyjibbit, thank you. Shame our boys are different ages or I'd happily pass on a few things in return too.

There's a Primark in the town I'm going to tomorrow so I'll have a look in there. As long as I don't get proper smart trousers (yuk on a 6 yo IMO) then he'll get to wear them again. We're just not the type of family that require smart clothes very often.

M&S navy chinos - they would do (or khaki or brown? any of those colours would look fine with a nice shirt)

Dominion · 24/09/2008 22:56

Navy troursers and a shirt, even a white school shirt. Maybe a v neck sweater on top?
These are items he can wear again, and can be bought cheaply and easily in Asda, Mothercare, Next, Hennes (H&M) etc....

PrimroseHall · 24/09/2008 23:02

I like those in navy WW. And they would do as a spare pair of school trousers afterwards. Thank you. I'll see what their delivery terms are. The bonus with M&S is that they don't take my card so I'll have to call ex-p and get his credit card details.

Thanks Dominion. DS wears navy and jade polo shirts for school and they have logos, so that's a no-go. MC, Next, Hennes are all in the local highstreet so I'll have a look tomorrow evening.

M&S do offer next-day delivery, PH, so you should be able to get them in time. They haven't got a lot of shirts on the website though so you'd probably be better getting those elsewhere.

Good luck

TheRealMrsJohnSimm · 24/09/2008 23:13

I would go for navy trousers, shirt (try Gap), and smarten up his shoes with Scuff Stuff and polish . Have to say that I think most "smart" clothes for boys are unspeakably naff. Would never dream of putting my boys in what many people consider "acceptable wedding wear for boys".....even if they did offer to pay!

PrimroseHall · 24/09/2008 23:23

at "unspeakably naff smart clothes for boys". DS does look naff in anything smart, as does his dad who I'm sure will be cringing in his hired top hat and tails and shoes that he'll be pulling the loft apart trying to find on the morning of the wedding

Thanks WW. You've really helped me. Ex-p is putting an order in now So, it's just shoes and a shirt for me to get tomorow. I'm beginning to feel quite brave, and seeing as I'm not going anyway I may just think fuck it tomorrow and get him what I want to. Then I could send his school shoes along with him and he can change into them if necessary. I absolutely begrudge making him wear smart shoes, far more so than any other part of the outfit.

My bath is getting cold so I'm off now.

school trousers and shoes
clean shirt and funky tie
done

snorkle · 25/09/2008 10:43

Boys are more tricky (and expensive) than girls for weddings imo. I feel your pain PH, I've just had to buy ds(14) a suit which he will most likely wear just the once before it's outgrown.

PrimroseHall · 25/09/2008 16:06

I agree about girls being easier snorkle. You can get really nice dresses for £15 and pretty shoes for a fiver. Girls are less likely to make such a fuss about getting dressed up as well and will probably want to wear the outfit again.

I couldn't be arsed with shopping today so I've ordered a shirt and shoes from Next. Hopefully they'll turn up with the M&S trousers tomorrow.

You got this one, didn't you, PH?

It's OK, we won't tell

vvv wise of you to do it online. The only thing worse than clothes shopping with a reluctant small boy is the same thing with 2 reluctant small boys...

PrimroseHall · 25/09/2008 17:14

WW. I snorted at that when I first came across it in the online catalogue. DS would never forgive me.

Yep, agree about the joys of clothes shopping with small boys. Trumped only by the joy of doing homework with small boys IMO. 2 small boys = double the torture
