Why do so many men do it? I blame footballers, why are they allowed to do it on the pitch? Can't they hock up in the lavs before a game? Can we start a Mumsnet campaign to program our sons, roping in premiership footballers and their mums?

Its absolutely fucking disgusting. I used to live in the scum-magnet that is Whitechapel where I saw/heard a man hoik it all up, close off one nostril and eject it all out the other one. Not sure if that's still considered spitting. At least I was so shocked I had the courage to say something - and I haven't looked back.

YA absolutely NBU. As jette said so succinctly, it is absolutely fucking disgusting, and it actually makes me gag if I see it. It's not just men either, I was once walking behind a normal-looking 30-something woman at Oval tube who spat to her side just when I was walking past and it landed on my shoe. I was retching all the way to work afterwards.

I absolutely can't stand it especially when your trying to negotiate a toddler along the pavement trying to avoid dog poo and spit!

No. It's horrible. Makes me want to retch TBH. I went on a field trip years ago with a lad who not only used to spit but also to blow his nose without a hankie and then shake the resulting mess off his hand.

I have witnessed a group of teenage girls in their school uniforms doing it aswell whilst rolling their own fags in the middle of the high st. Disgusting.

Am suspicious of joggers/runners too, I've heard many would rather wee in their shorts than interrupt a run (or wee beforehand). Is this true?

The Muslim lady at the end of my road keeps spitting on the pavement at the mo. It's Ramadan and she isn't allowed to swallow. The road has many little splatters of spittle and flob on the pavement. Not very nice when DS falls in it.

I had to ask a group of teenagers to stop spiting in the playpark...

explained DS keeps falling over still and kind of bless them they went out the children's bit ahhhh (don't spit at all you filthy scum I wanted to say but they were big and harder than me!)

While waiting for my scan in a NHS hospital on Friday, a woman walked past us, she worked there as had a white uniform on, she then turned a corner and all we heard was a massive "Draw-back" and then her cough it up into her throat/mouth. EEEWWWWWEEEE

My breathing is a pile of shite because of asthma and other things. If I get proper phlegm (instead of just saliva) building up in my mouth I have to spit it out because if I swallowed it it just comes back a few seconds later causes a massive coughing fit and sets off my asthma. (great)

Buuuut, in my defence, I will always determinedly hold it in my mouth to find an open bin/bathroom if I haven't got a tissue, and have very rarely been forced to spit in a gutter grate because I can't find anywhere else. I'm always embarrassed because of all the judging. yes you people, I mean yoooou.

laweaselmys - I have the same issues. But like you, I use a tissue. Not sure why anyone would find it that difficult
