to think that trick or treating for three year olds is not right

My lo has been invited to a halloween party which I thought would be fun and I accepted to be told that they were going to go trick or treating afterwards. I feel awkward about it - bit scary at that age, don'tlike the idea of her walking around in the dark (5pm and obviously with adults) essentially begging. I then feel like a total hypocrite because it is harmless fun and I always have sweets ready for the kids that knock and think they are quite cute. How do I politely decline or am I being ridiculous? My DH has said he feels the same.

LOL I should have known it was an Edinbugger thing.

pointydog · 18/09/2008 21:41

hem hem. Lothians, central, Fife.

You are soo glasgow-centric

falcon · 18/09/2008 21:43

You mean there are other parts of Scotland?

Blandmum · 18/09/2008 21:44

It isn't just a scotish thing either.

I went out on halloween, and I grew up in south wales in the 1960s.

My father did the same in the 20s and 30s!

We would knock on doors and ask 'Please will you help Mari LLoyd' (this was, I think, a skeleton horse representaion of death in morality plays, rather than the Music hall star!)

ScottishMummy · 18/09/2008 21:44

Urr ye gauin guising doon the scheme!we weren't allowed.never did it

elmoandella · 18/09/2008 21:46

took ds guising when he was only 18 months last year with neighbours kids just round a couple of doors. he loved it!!!

specially the costumes. he's a fan of all things disgusting and scary. he'll be going again this year with his little sis 16 months and neighbourhood kids.

i rmemeber going when i was little. it's fantastic fun. why anyone would stop their kids doing one of the few traditions that we still celebrate in a non commercial way is beyond me.

in my house we spend all day making tasty tray bake and sticky apples to give out after we've been to our guising.and there's none of this expensive card business that seems to have taken over all other holidays. we make outifts and paint our faces

TheCrackFox · 18/09/2008 21:49

Did anyone else go dookin' for apples?

elmoandella · 18/09/2008 21:49

the was the best bit. and you face paint ran down your face into water

falcon · 18/09/2008 21:50

Non commerical? Most people buy costumes and heaven knows how much is spent on sweets a few weeks before Halloween.

Depends entirely on how your DC feel about it. Trick or treat is popular round our way and I love it, always have sweets in and dress DS up. This year he will be 4 so am going to make his dad come over on halloween and choose whether he wants to a) take DS to the neighbouring houses with pumpkins or halloween decorations or b) stay in my house and give sweets to callers.

falcon · 18/09/2008 21:51

Apologies for posting that twice.

elmoandella · 18/09/2008 21:51

and then you got to divvy up all the stuff you got (from your supermarket carrier bag, not one of these ones you have to buy now)

and do swapsies with your siblings of the things you didn't like.i used to love the satsumas and swap for peanuts.

falcon · 18/09/2008 21:53

I loved ducking for apples, you used to do it with your teeth, well at least I did, but then they changed it to holding a fork in your mouth and attempting to drop the fork onto it, skewering it. Not nearly as fun.

elmoandella · 18/09/2008 21:53

non commercial in the way that theirs no cards or present swapping that HAS to happen on some of the others holidays. even easter these days is about presents for some people. in my house it's strictly a chocolate eggs maximum. no cards!!

falcon · 18/09/2008 21:53

Does anyone still give out monkey nuts at Halloween?

ScottishMummy · 18/09/2008 21:53

dooking fir apples.eugh clarty other folk spit in water banging heids to get an apple. Naw

but i get stuff in for weans and give to the guisers

ScottishMummy · 18/09/2008 21:54

i give monkey nuts, oranges, chocolate and wee carton orange BUT expect a song/rhyme first

pointydog · 18/09/2008 21:56

"(this was, I think, a skeleton horse representaion of death in morality plays, rather than the Music hall star!)"

nope. I've read that twice and still have no idea what it means.

elmoandella · 18/09/2008 21:57

i try to make stuff to limit the amount of e numbers i'm giving out. and also to give me something fun to do with the kids.

make up wee bags with piece of fruit, handfull nuts, malteser traybake, sticky apple/chocolate apple and some sort of juice.

make a dozen and once they're done we turn lights off and stop answering door!!

pointydog · 18/09/2008 21:58

and what do you people mean 'do you remember dookin for apples'. We never stopped. People still do these things, y'know. I was biting treacle scones off the mil's washing line just a couple of years ago. (Admittedly, I didn't find that great fun)

ScottishMummy · 18/09/2008 21:59

likey treacle scone idea.sounds braw

elmoandella · 18/09/2008 22:01
