To not want random strangers to come to my door to spread a message from the Bible?

Just had someone buzz my doorbell (waking the baby up ) to "spread a message from the Bible". Am I being unreasonable to not want random people coming uninvited to my house to preach to me?

Whether I am religious or not I just think it is rude to go door to door imposing on people preaching about anything. I told them no and asked them not to come back (they said they come around every three months) so now I feel guilty that I might have offended them. Jeez, I don't need this emotional turmoil before 10.30am!

but if you repent you will get saved at Armageddon and live forever in paradise on earth with all the snuggly lions!!!

I could never be rude to Mormons at the door (not that we've had any yet) because I was good friends with one who found my 5 yo dd when she was missing, and brought her home to me.

I can however be rude to JWs because I give blood and find their attitude towards blood transfusion inexplicably inhumane. Well not rude exactly, but not welcoming either. I refused their publications last time they came but foisted our church magazine on them!
I have challenged their beliefs at the door and they have been unable to answer me. They refused to come in when invited - probably because they knew they were on to a loser with me.

BUT in a democracy I think it is important that people have the right to go and knock on doors for any reason - so long as they go away when told. It is no worse than junk mail through the post. JWs were persecuted by the Nazis in WWII just as Jews and other minorities were.

They may have woken your baby, Bumperlicious, but rejoice in the fact that your baby has been born into freedom - freedom for JWs to doorstep and for you to say Bugger Off.

Not sure about the right to knock on your door. If you concede that then you're saying they can disturb you as often as they want.

Normally someone should only knock on your door if they have a reasonable expectation that they will be welcome. Perhaps they know you or they are delivering a parcel, reading the meter etc. Otherwise they should write to you to ask for an appointment.

I have a neat little notice that makes it clear I am not interested in being sold anything at my door including religion.

Interesting to hear the JWs are still preaching hellfire. Most christians tell me "oh no one says that any more" and I've been accused of spreading invented nonsense because I'm an atheist.

One time some JWs knocked on my door and asked me if my mum or dad was in. I responded with perfect honesty that they weren't (I was 25 and living in a houseshare). Then they went away.

I had a really lovely girl this morning who said "well than kyou for asnwereing the door"

Bless.

But what are the dreadfully dull clothes about?

onager · 20/09/2008 21:01

But what are the dreadfully dull clothes about?>>

if you look into a lot of religions you'll find that 'god' has an obsession with clothes and hairstyles (it must be cut/it must not be cut/it must only be cut here, but not there). He has a day job as a fashion designer.

When you hear about 'Intelligent design' that's what it's about.

I tell them my sister is a JW and they leave me alone???!!! She really is.She goes knocking door to door. Pls forgive her she is mad as a hatter. I think that she would have been a biker chick, heroin addict with kids from different fathers on the dole otherwise. Her god I think is her addiction.
So JW is still cheaper for society. Sorry again

noonki · 21/09/2008 21:24

how can you not answer door to them. i have so many people from meter readers to charities to kids selling stuff they've made. other than the kids you can never really be sure what they're after till you open and speak to them.

but even with charities i always refuse and say i have my own i use. we got a letter from police just after we moved here. saying to be vigilant as there was a fake charity doing the rounds.

I usually just point to my recycle bin and tell them to put the watchtower in there and cut out the middleman

brightongirldownunder · 22/09/2008 15:47

I just stare at them without blinking and they usually run away...

Are some people really operationg on such a tightly coiled spring that they can't cope with a harmless JW at the door??

bloomingfedup - my DW did the same! And now they keep coming back!

Sometimes they get me. I quite enjoy it. I soon wear them down.

Tortington · 22/09/2008 16:32

a slight annoyance

but wouldnt anyone be annoying if they had woken your baby up

i would put a sign on door in future shit you not. - do not knock until after 3pm baby asleep - or somesuch

i was doing the fornt garden after having just moved it - it was a glorious day and these two men in ties ans pristine shirts came round the corner and i know right then that i was caught! i smiled and listened and told them what church i was planning to o to as i had recently moved, we had a 5-10 min discussion. i asked about their accents - one was from las vagas and one from Preston - not to far from my original home town.

then one of them said to me " you have been very patient listening to us, can we help you do your garden?"

ithanked them kindly but refused, i couldnt bare it if they got their shirts dirty! andi hate to play hostess.

JW's helped my mum - she chatted with them politley as i do - being polite - what people should try to be ofcourse, and she mentioned that her wooden outside door expanded in the winter, and they came round the next day with some plains and fixed it.

i have a lot of respoect for the genuine - wanting to help out in what they consider to be a christian way

its certainly a lot better than praying and then bitching at the back of church like the old cronies seen to do at the churches i go to
