To not volunteer for the PTA cake stall again this term, seeing as how they'll no longer accept shop-bought products?

When I took a whole load of shop-bought little fairy cakes, doughnuts and muffins in from Morrisons today, the school secretary said: "oh we can't accept those, we can only accept home-baked stuff now. It's the law".

Seeing as how this sort of cake has been the norm on the cake stall for the last 5 years (it's been about half and half home baked and shop bought), either the govt must have sneaked in a new law over the summer while the rest of parliament was in recess, or the school are hardened law-breakers. The stall is on Fridays, so baking would have to happen on Thursdays and that is football and dancing day, so no chance.

Am I supposed to distress the farking things a la I don't know how she does it?

Our school has just disbanded the PTA due to lack of interest.

But they didn't have any avenue for parents to donate cash.

bossykate · 13/09/2008 13:24

you know you can freeze fairy cakes?

WideWebWitch · 13/09/2008 13:25

LB, honestly, this takes 15 mins or less:

125g each of sr flour, sugar and butter
2 eggs
1tsp baking powder
1 tsp vanilla essence

whizz up in a blender, put into cases, cook for 15 mins. It's Nigella not me btw.

But as you are hardline now you probably won't want to make them!

WideWebWitch · 13/09/2008 13:25

lol at freezing

LittleBella · 13/09/2008 13:25

Can you really? I didn't think you could freeze egg?

Our school's pta is run like a global corporation

WideWebWitch · 13/09/2008 13:26

How tf have I morphed from dissing the PTA to posting fairy cakes recipes?

Sorry!

LittleBella · 13/09/2008 13:26

LOL. Am softening a bit.

Not sure that DD would allow me to freeze them tbh. She would want to scoff them all.

Haven't got a food mixer, would a hand held blender do?

Cammelia · 13/09/2008 13:27

That's cos you are morphing into sahm www

Soapbox · 13/09/2008 13:27

It isn't the PTA that is the problem - it is the 'normal' parents!

On the day of the cake sales you see all the mums queuing up to park in the car park (normally verboten), pleading with Fred (the car park man) that as they have 50 million cakes to drop off, they MUST be allowed to park in the car park

The good news about the cake sales stopping, is that the PTA have replaced them with second hand uniform sales - 1/3 proceeds the parents keep 2/3 to the school! All of the lost property bin is washed and put into the last sale of the year with all proceeds to the school! A far more sensible way to raise money in my book

unknownrebelbang · 13/09/2008 13:27

rofl at the thought of our pta having power and control.

bossykate · 13/09/2008 13:28

and i know it is de rigeur to vilify faith schools as hotbeds of iniquitous injustice - but the dc's school is scrupulous about giving parents the opportunity to support the school in ways that don't involve spending a lot of cash.

as well as expert in getting cash out of those who can afford it of course

and the pta events really are about building the school community as well as fund-raising.

LittleBella · 13/09/2008 13:31

I'm LOL ing at the idea of our PTA having powre and control as well. Crazed marmies waving their whisks and demanding to know if you have a table cloth with you...

bossykate · 13/09/2008 13:32

LOL! that is the fairy cake recipe i have used since www first posted it in the pleistocene era it really does take very little time - although probably longer if you don't have a blender, as i would cream the butter and sugar together first in that case.

bossykate · 13/09/2008 13:34

i'm sure you could freeze the cakes - before icing obv.

LittleBella · 13/09/2008 13:36

Oh yes now you're adding things... icing...

lol LB.

queenbea · 13/09/2008 14:00

What do you mean by 'Its on Fridays'? Is it every Friday? It is against the law for schools to sell cakes, sweets or crisps on a frequent basis ie Summer and Christmas fair ok, weekly cake sale is not ok. I think you might be able to sell plain cakes.

Cammelia · 13/09/2008 14:18

who ever knew there were so many laws re cakes and schools

Haven't the govt got anything better to do

Blu · 13/09/2008 18:52

Are you calling WWW a dinosaur, BK?

LittleBella · 13/09/2008 19:06

Ooh, they are hardened criminals then. It is every friday after school.

I think you will avoid prison if they do not contain 'confectionery'. I don't know what the definition of confectionery is. I'm not sure though, I think you may only be able to sell cakes without confectionery on a weekly basis if its part of a midday meal. You also can't give them dried fruit if the glazing agent is more than 0.5% or if it has a yogurt coating. Ice cream can be served at any time of day but cones can only be served at lunchtime. Its bizarre. You can't give croissant at a breakfast club but you can at lunchtime. Perhaps the government is trying to put all the children on a food combination diet.

blu, i feel like a dinosaur mnetter these days!
