My MIL has put DD in a local baby of the year competition without asking me first

I abhor these type of things. Why would anyone put their child in a competition to be judged on basis of how cute they are or aren't. I'm so cross with her, but can't express it - so poor DH has born the brunt of my fury. I know she's proud of DD but seriously - I find it an ojectification of her - and at such an early age. She's 3 - she understands what has happened FFS!

I really don't think YABU at all, those kind of competitions make me cringe and I wouldn't appreciate my dc's being entered without my knowledge either.

I'd simply bin the form and not address it with your MIL if you don't feel comfortable. If she ever asks, you can say you just didn't feel it was a good idea and leave it at that.

JacobsPrincess · 11/09/2008 20:14

We entered DS1 into a photo competition in our local paper when he was 13months. He's always been a show off for the camera, so really we just wanted the professional photograph. Then we got a call from the paper a month later - my gorgeous baby had won. £250 of vouchers and a huge framed print of winning photo were the prize. So these comps aren't all a fix.
Only problem is DS2 has now arrived, and if he's not entered and doesn't win we could be in for some real ammo for sibling rivalry!!

I would not have been happy about anyone entering my babies without my permission though.

ChukkyPig · 11/09/2008 20:18

Jacobs you may have to spend the £250 vouchers on a huge framed professional photo of DS2 stamped "winner"!!!

MargeSimpsonMyAlterEgo · 11/09/2008 20:21

hmmm. someone who calls herself josh holloway's piece of ass is worried about objectivisation of her daughter... doesn't ring true to me. and why on earth would her picture in the paper make you worry about paedeophilia? YABU and i feel sorry for your MIL.

JacobsPrincess · 11/09/2008 20:28

Good idea Chukky

Sycamoretree · 11/09/2008 21:25

Goodness Marge - a grown woman having a bit of fun with an online user name (JH is IMHO the sexiest man on TV) being used to accuse a mother of not truthfully being bothered about objectification of her DD? Why would she bother posting if not? Are we supposed to assume all user names are so literal? Hate to think what we could accuse some MN'etters of!

Fimbo · 11/09/2008 21:31

They have one annually in our local rag. The photos are always taken at the local shopping centre. The queues are unreal.

Dh & I buy the paper when the photographs are in, so we can chuckle at some of the names

ethanchristopher · 11/09/2008 23:36

oh theres one of these in nottingham.

there are huge queues of parents clutching their screaming, bored-to-tears kiddies while tired photographers juggle rattles infront of the babies to get them to smile

how charming...

Clary · 11/09/2008 23:43

Oh yes fimbo agree about the names.

Also those hideous headband things people put round their baby daughter's heads

Clary · 11/09/2008 23:44

sorry

Baby daughters' heads (unless hideous multi-headed baby)

MargeSimpsonMyAlterEgo · 12/09/2008 20:11

Oops Sycamore - I have no idea who JH is!!! Yes, you're probably right, but I just though OP was being daft, so hit out at the first thing I thought of...

Janni · 12/09/2008 20:15

I would have hated it if MIL had done this, but I would probably have gritted my teeth and not made a fuss. I would have asked DH to speak to her after the event and ask her not to do it again because neither of you want your DD to feel judged by her looks at such a young age.

jellyforbrains · 12/09/2008 20:26

They are more naff than anything. I also look at my local one to see the names and headbands! Would not like it if my child was entered in one either - especially if not a baby any more and aware that the competition was happening.

hellsbells76 · 12/09/2008 20:39

these things are just a money making scam for the papers - you have to buy our local rag to get the voting form. i know someone who bought hundreds of copies to try and get his kid to win. he didn't. ha.

someone photoshopped a picture of a baby to make it look thoroughly grotesque and ugly (hairy cheeks, googly eyes, the works) and managed to get it printed - there was a blog about it but i can't find it now. was very funny.

my mil wanted to enter dd for it. i gave her my 'over my dead body' look and then she quickly backtracked and said she wouldn't as it wouldn't be fair on the other babies as she was so beautiful she'd win hands down. bless the grandmother's rose-tinted specs. at the time dd had the most horrific wonky fringe (courtesy of my inept hairdressing skills)...

Sycamoretree · 12/09/2008 21:10

Then you're in for a treat Marge! He players Sawyer on LOST, and is also the god diving through the ocean in the Davidoff Blue Water Ad.

For our collective delectation. With apologies to his RL wife for such blatant oggling, and to JOSHHOLLOWAYSPIECEOFASS for lusting after her cyber crush

mumeeee · 12/09/2008 23:28

YABU. It's only a photo.

eclectech · 12/09/2008 23:59

hellsbells76, are you thinking of Juanzo? He got banned in the end
Vote For Juanzo

hellsbells76 · 13/09/2008 08:02

that's the one! Brilliant, I enjoyed reading that again

Didn't he do something similar for a pet competition?

mm22bys · 13/09/2008 09:14

She should have asked you.

But then again, loads of people have won competitions they didn't even know they had been entered in!

YANBU though, she should have asked you!

(I load baby competitions too..)

mm22bys · 13/09/2008 09:15

What am I on this morning? Load?

LOATHE!

CostaRicanCod · 13/09/2008 09:15

how naff to KNOW someone ho even contemplates it

does she win a sash?
Does she spend the year doign chairatable works/

eclectech · 13/09/2008 11:36

The pictures have gone for the pets one...
www.preciouspetscompetition.blogspot.com/
Although I seem to recall some comment about introducing 'forensic tests' into the judging

And to avoid being too off-topic, FWIW I'd say YANBU to the OP. I'm sure MIL meant well but I would't be happy. Awful things.

Elasticwoman · 13/09/2008 21:36

Josh - she TRIED to enter her granddaughter. She didn't succeed. At least you have had your own way in this matter and quite right too. Yes, you can be cross, but I think it's time to calm down now, don't you?

steviesgirl · 16/09/2008 14:46

It's only a bit of fun. It's not like she entered her for a beauty pageant is it. It isn't supposed to be taken seriously. Most people enter their kids because they get a nice photo of their child, even if their LO doesn't win. Your MIL is proud of her! Lighten up, worse things happen at sea
