at ante natal appointment.
I'm expected to tip out said sample and rinse for my next appointment as they don't give out new ones anymore...apparently.
Yuk!! I am not happy, but aibu?

Isn't there a sink in the room you could just tip it into? Or are you expected to carry it home on the bus?

(I do remember many years ago having to give a sample at my then GP's and carry the lidless, steaming pot back through the very crowded waiting room...)

hughjarssss · 03/09/2008 01:30

I was expected to take my home as well. I just kept forgetting and leaving it on the desk .. by accident of course

YANBU

raindropsonroses · 03/09/2008 01:32

There appears only to be a sink for washing hands, so I get the pleasure of carrying it home.
I asked them about possible contamination, but they said it was fine.

Jeez, don't carry it home, tip into the nearest drain!

Tortington · 03/09/2008 02:08

its only piss

your own piss at that

jeez

viva recycling.

MrsJohnCusack · 03/09/2008 02:28

there must be a loo?!
and waht custy said

CNFT · 03/09/2008 06:43

I'm assuming you had to transport it to the ante-natal appointment in the first place so what's the difference in taking it back home again?

If I was a midwife I don't think I'd want the piss of 25 women emptied down the sink I wash my hands in either.

PuppyMonkey · 03/09/2008 06:51

I always had to do this. Use again and again. My first pregnancy was 12 years ago too. What's the big deal?

The tricky part is getting it in their in the first place imho...

hecate · 03/09/2008 06:53

Oh well, I assume there must be toilets at the hospital/unit/gp. They all have loos for patient use (sometimes you need to ask for a key). Go in there and tip it out if it bothers you to take it home.

kitbit · 03/09/2008 07:23

I thought you were meant to give a sterile sample each time? How can it be uncontaminated if there's likely to be soap in it???

And yes, why in the wink? Tip in the loo!

belgo · 03/09/2008 07:41

It only has to be completely sterile if it's sent off for analysis.

If it's just for the dip test, then rinsing out and reusing the same pot will be fine.

mm22bys · 03/09/2008 07:47

Ummm tip it down the toilet instead of taking it home?

Do you mean they give you ONE urine pot at the start of your pregnancy, when you get to your antenatal clinic you put sample in pot, they test it for whatever, then you have to tip it out, take it home, then repeat the whole process next time you go you antenatal clinic?

What is our health service coming to?

YANBU.

CantSleepWontSleep · 03/09/2008 07:48

I always took home and re-used pot when seeing community midwife. Get over yourself.

naturalblonde · 03/09/2008 07:52

I have to do that. Must admit I waa bit surprised but it's not really a big deal.

MaryAnnSingleton · 03/09/2008 07:55

our doctors surgery used to give us empty film (35mm) containers to put wee samples in.
I bought myself a proper one from chemist and washed it and reused but I'd caution people to give them a really good scrub as the MW towards the end of my pregnancy reckoned there can be traces of protein left,or something...

wem · 03/09/2008 07:59

eh? what's the problem? I'm having to do this too. It's my first pregnancy and even I know I'll have to be dealing with a lot more than my own piss in a little plastic pot soon.

SoupDragon · 03/09/2008 07:59

I've had 3 pregnancies and only ever had 3 pots in total.

It's not difficult, you rinse it out.

alkar · 03/09/2008 08:01

YANBU I work in a lab and we would never do this. There is a risk of cross contamination. If they wont give you another then make sure you rinse the pot with boiling water.

sockmonkey · 03/09/2008 08:04

I actually got a bit attatched to my little pots. Can't see the problem really.
I remember my Sis finding a pot still full in an old handbag, about 4 years down the line [yuck]

I had to do this too. It did surprise me at first tbh. I had a special 'pisspot' toothbrush for cleaning it out as, after 30 odd weeks, rinsing wasn't enough

snookie28 · 03/09/2008 08:08

I asked for mine back to reuse. just seemed such a waste to chuck out a plastic container everytime. i suppose having a toddler does make you more immune to the horrors of bodily fluids. what annoys me more is the shape of the container. my aim is not the best and trying to pee into a testtube shaped container is not a mess-free process

CantSleepWontSleep · 03/09/2008 08:09

lol at 'pisspot toothbrush' .

Ronaldinhio · 03/09/2008 08:09

Ours make you wee on a stick at the surgery and then bring it forth, dripping urine, for the mw's inspection.
YABU there is no dignity in pregnancy

FfreckleFface · 03/09/2008 08:10

I had to do this too. Bloke told me off for putting the pot through the dishwasher (obviously after rinsing it thoroughly first!)

My only issue with it was that towards the end of the pregnancy, when my poor brain had started to crumble, I forgot that I ad put it back into giant Mary Poppins style handbag, and wandered merrily around with a pot of wee for about four days. Oops. At least being cross about it means you won't forget you have it!
