to be seething over very rude man at Soft Play?

Yes, it was my fault for going to Soft Play.

OK, so all the schools have gone back in my town so I thought I would venture to soft play with the DS's and a friend and her DS as Ds1 starts reception next week (staggered start).
When I got there they charged me the full rate (£8.10 (no drinks) for DS's of 4.5/2.5yrs old, it's normally £5 for them in term time with free drinks for them, coffee for me.) I asked why as children had gone back to school, they said they hadn't in that area (not sure if that is true or not, it is only next town). So I said I didn't have that much on me and would leave it, thankyou.
Start putting on Ds1's shoes as swiftly as possible to avert inevitable tantrum and have to explain to him why we aren't staying.
I said we hadn't enough money on us, he kept on asking "But how much money do we need?" etc etc so I calmly said "DS1 I am not paying £8.10 for you to play here".
Man behind the counter comes said "Madam, can you lower your voice please, other customers can hear you and you are trying to ruin our business" in such a pompous tone. There were only people paying to get in (all with one child and obviouskly happy to pay the price, fair enough)
I got the DS's shoes on and asked my friend to watch them and went back and told him to please not speak to me like that, I was trying to explain to my son and there was no need to be so rude. It all descended into a big row, with me saying that their customer service didn't warrant a fee like that (it doesn't, there is always a queue, they always mix up shoes etc), basically very embarrassing and I am very upset.
I only went there because it was term time (I thought) and I never ever get into rows like this, it was all too much today and I hope that no-one I know was in there. Although we were in reception area so noone could haveheard me.
We then went to the park as it had stopped raining which was free, but I felt awful and so embarrassed.
I must add that the only reason I stuck up for myself was because I had had an awful morning with the DS's and am menstrual. I also didn't shout or swear at him, although he was shaking with anger and actually did that "sticking tongue into chin thing" at which point I said he was "a vile man" and stormed off.
Be gentle

If it is that one, some of the schools don't go back until thursday around that area.

WendyWeber · 02/09/2008 18:51

That's not the point though - as of today it is term-time in that area, even if all the local schools choose to have inset days, and he needs to know that.

Trading Standards might like to know too...

Lizzylou · 02/09/2008 19:53

OOh, yes it is R ...K, Haslingden schools go back tomorrow (some do).
I have just got back from new Childminders, she has been telling me a fair few tales about the place too. Including said man shouting at children and ripping people off financially.
OOH, am calm now. Just won't ever go back, which is a pity as it is a very good soft play place (I love playing basketball there)

Don't just let it go though, Lizzylou - please post on netmums, say that you think it's a great place BUT that after the way you were treated today you won't be going there again!

And tell your local Trading Standards, if the website says

"Weekdays before 3pm school term
£3 first child, £2.50 per extra child
(Free first coffee Tues, Wed, Thurs)"

then that's what you should have been charged today & he was ripping everybody off.

Ilovetoboogie · 02/09/2008 20:00

It is expensive in there, not just the entry but the food/drinks too. I have seen that man telling children off more than once. I don't go there often - too expensive - not keen on that guy

There is a wacky in rawtenstall - £2.50 per child, food is nice and cheap too. Also a place in bacup - kids at play and little treasures in accrington.

Lizzylou · 02/09/2008 20:00

D'you know Wendy, I think I will.
I am feeling all empowered and full of bravado.
It's all most unlike me!

Thanks for all your support

Love Kids at Play, now the owner there knows about customer service, he is lovely.
It's just a pity it's not as big, but is always my preference

Good!

(I do wonder though why blokes like him with an attitude like that get into running a children's play centre in the first place )

BalloonSlayer · 02/09/2008 21:39

Blimey the times I have planned a daytrip to an outdoor place this summer and had to cancel dute to it pissing down.

I was pondering only today on the effect it must have on their businesses.

The proprietors of indoor places like the one you visited must be coining it in. For this bloke to be worrying about his business being ruined, they must be crap. Which, as you have discovered, they are.

would the trading standards be able to do anything about it though? because surely prices on a website would be viewed in the same manner as price tags on clothes etc, i.e. an invitation to treat rather than an offer?
i'm sure someone more knowledgable than myself will come along with the answer

From the Department for Business Enterprise and Regulatory Reform website

Misleading Prices
The Consumer Protection Act 1987 makes it a criminal offence to give consumers a misleading price indication about goods, services, accommodation (including the sale of new homes) or facilities.

REPORT HIM!!!!!

Lizzylou · 03/09/2008 11:47

Thanks all, I emailed said soft play, with the link that Wendy Weber supplied re: term times and expressed outrage at having been treated so appallingly.
I have now got an apology (he disagrees with my account a tad, and also didn't like the fact that I said that £8.10 for 2 preschoolers was an "extortionate amount") and an offer of a complimentary visit for both boys, he also wants me to ask for him personally (he is a Director/joint owner)and he will apologise in person.
So, a result. I don't want to go back though!

Well at least he backed down a bit, & apologised, & it may make him think twice next time a customer queries something with him...

Anyway well done you for following through (I think you should take up the free session offer though, purely so that he has to pay for it - you don't ever have to go again!)
