to be gutted that my kids are going back to school?

Everyone I know is practically counting down the hours until their DC go back to school but I'm gutted! I really love the time we have together in the hols, hate all the routine and rushing around during term time.

When I tell friends that I don't want my kids to go back to school they look at me like I have two heads!

Depends what sort of 'home education type set up'you are talking about tiredemma.
If you mean sitting down doing lessons from 9-3 then I agrer with you completely!. That would make my blood run cold too-and my kids!

We don't do any formal lessons. Instead we live life much like every other family does, when enjoying the school holidays, but we live like that all of the time. Happy people live at our house4. Put simply our children have learned through living life. Called 'Autonomous' home based education in the UK, orUnschooling in America.

Not for everyone I know, but for families who don't want to send their children back to school, or whose children are having problems-it just might be the answer!

I will really miss my dd - it will be too quiet without her. Also dd2 starts nursery next week so I am going to have empty nest syndrome in the mornings at least.

Polgara2 · 01/09/2008 17:41

I am not looking forward to my two going back either. It's just that lazy holiday feeling, no rushing round to a schedule, not having to be sociable unless you feel like it etc etc. I am really enjoying being in their company (they are not toddlers though!) What's that line 'the halcyon days of summer'(?) sort of thing (despite it not being very summery ).

CountessDracula · 01/09/2008 17:42

DD is so sweet and funny at the moment I want her all to myself

brimfull · 01/09/2008 17:43

is it terrible to remind you all its 116 days to christmas ?

eddiejo · 01/09/2008 17:48

NO !! am counting the days too.......

Mercy · 01/09/2008 17:48

What Fio said!

Although I will admit to a wobbly moment last night - dd will be going into the junior part of the school and she seems so innocent compared to some of the older children.

chapstickchick · 01/09/2008 17:49

we are having a takeway and i have bought ben and jerrys chunky monkey to make the most of our last night of the summer hols

eddiejo · 01/09/2008 17:51

We're off to legoland tomorrow!!
They don't go back till wed!!!

overthemill · 01/09/2008 17:52

just got back from a mate's and we were saying how short the hols seemed this year!
Have really enjoyed the time with my dd and her mates and the odd day doing special things - but apart from our actual camping hol none of it cost anything!

Thank god for the library, walks, paddling in the river, baking and the good old dvd player (swapping among mates for a change of films).

Now on countdown for the half etrm holiday..

ReallyTired · 01/09/2008 17:53

Long summer holidays are great for kids if you have plenty of money to do things with them. Its a chore though if you are skint.

My son is desperate to get back to school as he misses his friends. He is a girly swot who loves school.

However, I'm gutted that the summer holiday is over. I work in a school.

Countingthegreyhairs · 01/09/2008 17:53

DD went back to school today. I'm happy and sad at the same time.

overthemill · 01/09/2008 17:57

agree but actually deliberately set out to do the holidays this year with no expenditure at all. Apart from slightly higher spend than usual on food (ie bought packs of freezer lollies rather than let them have expensive shop ones). We got together with friends at lunchtimes some days each bringing on picnic and made use of everything locally that was free. I had odd day with dd alone and it was lovely. She is great company.

though tbh if we hadn't already booked the hol camping I would have been a bit sad.

chapstickchick · 01/09/2008 17:58

really tired i have to disagree we havent had tons of money to spare this holiday and havent done much that costs mega money-in fact i stepped in looking after a neighbours child (im qualified and did it in their home)and because i refused to accept payment they took my children to the cinema!!

this summer has gone really well for me because theres a group of 3-4 mums who are v alike me in my parenting attitude and as a result all our children have had places to play and things to do.

Amethyst86 · 01/09/2008 17:58

YANBU - I am dreading it, I love having DS at home.

However I am not the type to home school so I see it as a necessary evil.

pointydog · 01/09/2008 18:01

'gutted' is a strong word to use. I'd be gutted if my children were sent off to boarding school for three months without my consent but not just because they were going to school.

Kimi · 01/09/2008 18:03

YANBU at all, I hate hate hate hate hate it!!!!

francagoestohollywood · 01/09/2008 18:08

It's another week before they go back to school here in Italy. I can't wait, after nearly 3 months of children around. I need some space.

OrmIrian · 01/09/2008 18:12

Me too.

I love the loose routine (for loose read non-existent). I love the lack of lunch boxes. I love only having to get myself out of the house in the morning. My DCs are totally relaxed.

Podrick · 01/09/2008 18:15

Why oh why do the holidays have to end?
