A policeman stood before his god,
As always must come to pass.
He hoped his boots were shining
as brightly as his brass.
"step forward now policeman,
How shall i deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek
and to my church have you been true?
The policeman squared his shoulders and
said "No lord i guess i aint.
Cause those of us who carry guns and deal with scum
Cant always be a saint!
I have had to work such long days
and sometimes my talk was tough
and at other times i have been violent
cause the world is awfully rough.
But i never took a penny that wasnt mine to keep
And i ve had to work a lot of overtime
when the bill s got just too steep.
I never passed a cry for help
though at times i shook with fear.
And at times god forgive me
I cried unmanly tears.
I dont know if i deserve a place
Among people who are here
they never wanted me around
except to calm their fears.
So if you ve a place here lord
it need not be so grand
in life i did not expect or need much
so if you don t i understand.
There was a silence all around the throne
where saints had often trod as the
policeman waited quietly
for the judgement of his god.
"step forward now BRAVE OFFICER
You have born you burdens well
Walk peacefully on my heavens streets
YOU HAVE SERVED YOUR TIME IN HELL!!!

I'm not in the least bit riled. Just a bit disappointed (again).

It's too hard to explain. I find people generally...disappointing (I'm far too intense I think)

handlemecarefully · 31/08/2008 00:04

I read this thread and I only see a caustic belittling dismissal of Lulah's OP - but then I am very very tired, may have got it out of proportion and certainly need my bed.

Ronaldinhio · 31/08/2008 00:06

Disappointed how? Not everyone has the same love of sentimental "poetry" and expressing that here is fair enough surely?
Hope you're ok

beanieb · 31/08/2008 00:07

In answer to the original question

YABU.

Obviously so other mumsnetters have posted in the past about a subject you feel strongly about, and they have not fosted in the way you wanted them to. However YABU to bring it up again in an AIBU thread to have a dig.

YABU to do this.

handlemecarefully · 31/08/2008 00:08

Thanks, I'm fine (honestly).

It's not the best poetry in the world but the context requires some sensitivity - no?

policywonk · 31/08/2008 00:10

We weren't given any context at all to start with. And now the context we have been given is looking questionable, to say the least.

PollyDarton · 31/08/2008 00:11

snopes take on this

Ronaldinhio · 31/08/2008 00:13

I thought that adding this poem to a link about a situation concerning a live policing incident at the NHC was perhaps a step that I couldn't take.
Wondered its relevence and if it were a joke..ok also a bit flip so apologies. I'm new

handlemecarefully · 31/08/2008 00:18

So it would seem from this link that this poem is not the work of a recently bereaved police widow! Why would someone pretend that it was ?!?! [scratches head in bemused confounded way]

beanieb · 31/08/2008 00:23

because they fell for it...

handlemecarefully · 31/08/2008 00:29

If I thought an OP had 'fallen for it' I would point it out with a bit of tact and delicacy rather than ridicule / satire. But that's just me.

beanieb · 31/08/2008 00:32

but HMC

wasn't the whole point of this thread to rile people? from the title?

Lulah · 31/08/2008 00:34

I thought the posting on monday regarding the carnival and policing of it, had several comments posted which knocked the police in so many ways . Some of the accusations were unfair and i felt this so called poem (if you want to call it something different fine)had a few lines in relevant to perhaps provoke a thought into how it is from the other side.
I stumbled across it some years ago and it made me think about the police officers daily grief.
I am not the sort of person to want to "dig "and stupidly thought some might think as i do about the difficulties faced by what should be considered "our" police.

I don't know beanieb - could be that I am missing some history here having been out of the country during the Notting Hill carnival, and largely ignorant about what happened and any ensuing debates. Should bow out of discussion as I am probably not qualified to comment!

beanieb · 31/08/2008 00:37

Me too HMC, I don't really know what it's all about and realise I am probably just making an argument out of nothing. Apologies to Lulah. Am bowing out too.

HMC, apologies also forbeing so tenacious in my posting (is that the right word)

Respect to you.

handlemecarefully · 31/08/2008 00:42

Respect to you too! I'm not only off this thread, I'm off to bed. Well overdue (cream crackered)...Night all

Lulah · 31/08/2008 00:49

Handleme... I never implied this was a recently written poem at any stage.I cannot understand Beanie, as a newish MN i did not realise this would be met with such hostility.
I found it on my computer looking at "poems" ( bad ones or otherwise) i think in 2005 or 6 and it said it was written by a bereaved serving officers wife?
I did not research this , it just provoked thoughts and when i read mondays post i and read words "the police just looked scared" and "are nt they trained to deal with this" and " the policeman punched my partner" and they work the bank holiday because its good money for overtime" .
I don t think MN is for me. I accept my place in the unreasonable s valley !

Lulah, get some kip and reread in the morning. Just a typical mumsnet discussion with lots of bright women putting across their points of view.

PollyDarton · 31/08/2008 01:07

agrees with the brazilian
