Cornsilk - these were licked lollies that people had been eating Were the ones in your bags? I think pickers had been sucking them whilst working and just threw them down

cornsilk · 31/08/2008 14:04

yes licked lollies (gross)
also once a bag that had obviously been used before as was full of dried up stale milk that was all over the shopping.

Quattrocento · 31/08/2008 14:09

Sainsburys deliveries always on time IME.

Just watch out for the substitutions (tick no) because they once delivered dogfood instead of catfood. And salted butter (gross) instead of unsalted.

Tescos sound truly useless. Give them a miss.

georgimama · 31/08/2008 14:10

Is Ocado only in London?

I was going to start using Tesco to get tinned goods/dog food etc delivered, but they sound rubbish (I usually shop in Morrisons but they don't have a delivery service).

I think I'll try Asda then, I prefer Sainsburys as a supermarket but as I no longer buy meat from supermarket it won't make any difference really.

Ronaldinhio · 31/08/2008 14:12

Ocado is brilliant and now they have the Tesco price match thing

I've never ever had a problem and they bring it into the house and put it on the kitchen counter for me

Peachy · 31/08/2008 14:29

Ocado is lots of places- just not here

janeite · 31/08/2008 14:30

Tesco are the work of the devil; their online service is crap and they really, really don't care if you stop shopping with them because plenty of other people still do. Ocado are brilliant; Sainsburys are okay.

Elasticwoman · 31/08/2008 14:51

I am amazed to hear what bad service some of you have had from Tesco - we use it regularly and service has been very, very good. I have also used Sainsbury's, Ocado and Asda in the past, and Tesco seems to be best value for money.

I think it is because we live in an area without London-style traffic problems (although it can be pretty busy sometimes) and have the delivery at an unpopular time of day and week. Those of you who have suffered the most, have had tea-time deliveries.

This time, Mr Tesco turned up and said sorry, your raspberries fell out of the pack, so I won't charge you for them (he'd put them all back so we still ate them!) and some raspberry juice has gone on the milk container so I won't charge you for that either. (We wiped it off, no prob).

They might as well be nice to me as I spend a fortune with them.

CantSleepWontSleep · 31/08/2008 14:58

Sainsbury's cancelled on me once too, so they are no better.

georgimama · 31/08/2008 14:58

Just checked Ocado and they don't cover our area, odd as the nearest Waitrose is only about 15 miles away

Will try Asda and then Sainsburys for comparison.

CantSleepWontSleep · 31/08/2008 15:00

hecate - Waitrose deliver only charge you the lower amount if they sub too.

CantSleepWontSleep · 31/08/2008 15:01

georgimama - Ocado doesn't come from Waitrose stores, but from dedicated warehouses.
Waitrose deliver comes direct from stores, but only some stores offer it.

nbee84 · 31/08/2008 17:25

Dedicated Warehouse. It is in Hatfield and it processes around 85,000 orders per week. These then go out on temperature controlled lorries to 'spokes' around the country and then onto the smaller vans to deliver to the customer. There are around 1000 personal shoppers that work shifts round the clock 6½ days a week.

Because the shopping does not come from a store you are less likely to get substitutions in your shopping as stock levels are all computerised. Occasionally there may be a failed delivery to the warehouse or a pallet of damaged goods. You also will not get silly substitutions as thee substitutions are centrally controlled and not down to the picker.

Tesco seem to have a competition on who can come up with the most useless substitution - like lemon fairy liquid when there were no fresh lemons left. Bacon rashers for Quorn rashers!

Peachy · 31/08/2008 17:39

ah yes- we've had a competitive substitution- milk for dairy free soya

fab

cheerycherry · 31/08/2008 17:46

I have boycotted asda on line for the same reason, they did arrive, over 4 hours late, no phone calls/updates/feedback and, NO apopology even from the harrassed driver...he just moaned about how busy he was. We had no apology from anyone, by email or phone ,just the same 'we are looking into it' ... we had to cancel a night out cos we were waiting for a b***y supermarket shop! So boo to asda, but our tesco is fab!!

Nagapie · 31/08/2008 17:49

There should be calls made to have some face come over from the supermarkets and they can face the wrath of MN online!!

Katvic · 31/08/2008 21:01

Just ordered on-line from Tesco's this weekend 'cos I had loads of clubcard vouchers. It only took the one delivery to remind me just WHY I usually use Sainsbury's.

We asked for shopping in carriers - but most was tipped loose into those crates so you're scrabbling around trying to empty them fast. Red peppers had soft patches; tinned tomatoes @ £1.25 substituted with Napolina 4xpack costing £3.69 (!!!!!!); yoghurts upside down in the bag; one lid punctured; no attempt to sort your stuff into any kind of sensible order (bananas were in with washing powder, and smelled soapy). He tried to leave an entire crate of pedigree chum (we have no dog...); I couldn't choose the size of chicken thigh pack ('between 300g and 650g') so ended up with a tiny pack and having to share thighs between us...

oh god I could go on...

Plus Sainsbury's are so punctual (1-hour slots), so charming, so helpful, so much cheaper for delivery...

No comparison.

And I use Waitrose for special deliveries (dinner parties): they are simply fab.

Our Tesco service is great too, odd item out of stock or substituted but always for something suitable. Never had a late delivery or them not turn up.

Asda substitutes leave a lot to be desired, wotsits instead of soap powder

ClairePO · 02/09/2008 11:46

Sucked lollipops in with your shopping - bleurgh!!

I use ocado, they're great, the odd time they are late they call you to tell you and apologise. Carry everything into the kitchen for you. Often they'll call to say can they deliver early etc.

I used to use tesco but it just wasn't good enough with the quality of the fruit and veg, e.g. nearly out of date, bruised etc.

mindalina · 02/09/2008 11:49

DO IT DO IT DO IT.

Have you looked at my supermarket - you can put your shopping together on there and it tells you who would be cheapest - for me was Sainsburys over Tesco

I stopped buying from Tesco about a month or so ago when they cancelled my order half an hour before it was due, but didn't refund my money for four days They too offered me a frankly insulting £10 voucher for my next order. Not helpful when you've no food or money really.

I have nothing but good things to say for Sainsburys, who I have been using since. Their delivery people are much more cheerful as well, which is nice

Lozza70 · 02/09/2008 11:56

I have not used Tesco so cannot comment on them but I use Sainsburys and they have been fantastic recently. 1 hour delivery slots and cheaper ones in the middle of the week when it is quieter or when you spend over a certain amount, useful for those large heavy shops. My last 3 shops have also had everything I ordered, nothing at all missing or substituted which considering my order I've been plesantly surprised at. They have also carried the shopping into the kitchen for me unprompted, 34 weeks preg at the mo, so that's just been great service as far as I am concerned. They do come from a store so I suppose it depends on how good that store is.

Thank Goddess of shopping for online groceries. I was on the way to Tesco today when the car broke down. Turns out car v sick. In dock for several days. At least when I got home I was able to place a massive online order to arrive tomorrow.

Probably would have been able to do the same with one of the other online supermarkets, I must admit.

Flibbertyjibbet · 02/09/2008 22:27

I can't see a thread about Tesco deliveries without coming on to say that silsbf is a delivery driver for them. They eat practically free because he just takes home any returned food or unsuitable substitutions.
He reckons the warehouse let them ALL do it, but I reckon its why Tesco are so bloody expensive.
Its south manchester where he delivers btw.
