To be annoyed that DH expects me to fit all the food, our clothes, other items and six blinkin pillows in 10 square inches of car

Ok be nice to me I'm having an irritating morning.

We are going camping for the weekend today to meet up with DHs family. Last night DH packed the "big" stuff and as I am off this morning the idea is that I will put everything else in this morning as he is finishing work at lunch time. Fair enough I thought. He also phoned his family last night, after he had put the stuff in, to see if they needed anything. Turns out they had forgotten pillows and there are four of them, No problem says DH we will bring some.

Fast forward to this morning, I get my clothes and DS stuff packed, bag full of random necessary items and bag of non fridge food and a cool pack of fridge stuff to get in, oh and six pillows.

There is no room in the car, at all. I took down the back shelf and managed to get a couple of pillows in but absolutely no way I can get the rest of the stuff fitted in. Plus the minute I get something in So have had to email DH to let him no that amongst the essentials he has packed I will need to remove a) the second tent he wants to bring in case the first one gets wet b) the fourth and fifth chairs for visitors c) highly unlikely we can bring pillows for all his family. His response is that I should go to our neighbours who may or may not be in and ask if I can borrow their trailer, which may or may not have a tow bar.

AIBU to be a tad annoyed. I know its only a small thing, but I'm now set up for failure as whatever I will remove will of course be the exact things that DH feels would have made our weekend perfect. Plus he knew last night that we couldn't fit everything in so why on earth did he say we could bring all those pillows and why didn't he think about taking some of the non essentials. Arrghh.
Can you tell I hate camping and really don't want to go.

Peachy, that is a proper camping hat that is. Do you not having a matching one also?

rookiemater · 22/08/2008 12:27

I thought it would save me a job if DH packed. He is a highly intelligent man so I thought he would grasp the concept of a car having a finite amount of space.

This morning he had laid out the big bag for me to put DS and my clothes into. I asked if there was enough room to put it in the car, he said probably, I should have guessed at that point.

Want to swap with Miaows DH, although probably only for camping excursions, of which there are unlikely to be many in the future.

I find there is an inverse relationship betweens a man's intelligence and his ability to pack the car for a holiday.

stealthsquiggle · 22/08/2008 12:30

It's a bit late for rookiem (although you should definitely not go out of your way to make sure DH's bag goes in) but my DH is absolutely and completely convinced of the superiority of his spatial reasoning skills - so he is 100% in charge of getting the heap of luggage (which I generally have to pack/sort 90% of) into the car - so not my problem

I have occasionally thought about objecting to this superior attitude on principal but then I think better of it.

OTOH, we also seem to have evolved a system whereby he drives and I stay up the whole of the night before (sometimes literally) getting everything ready - but this does mean I can sleep in the car - or I could when we only had DS, who would also sleep in the car. DD doesn't seem to get that cars are for sleeping in

stealthsquiggle · 22/08/2008 12:32

principle, even

rookiemater · 22/08/2008 12:33

Yes I somehow always seem to end up taking the day off ( we have complicated child care arrangements so I try to tie in holidays to the Fridays where we have no cover) and packing the car.

Worse still is when we get home and I put the washing on, empty the bags, get DS dinner, sort our dinner out whilst DH waters the garden then plays chess.

Anyway I really must go if I have half a chance of getting my list ( seriously DH emailed a list) of chores done before he gets home.

Thanks everyone for cheering me up and reassuring me that I'm not being unreasonable.

Have fun, Rookie - maybe the Camp Commander thing will be diluted by SIL and her family [hopeful]?

Slubberdegullion · 22/08/2008 12:40

Have a good time

QuintessentialShadows · 22/08/2008 12:55

Have fun!

gasps at THE Hat. (I want something better than my turquise cap with Atlas Copco on)

Peachy · 23/08/2008 00:39

Ah my hat

erm

I have a peaked cap with LED lights built in

now that is a useful item!

Ok happy to report that camping expedition v successful, apart from deluge when taking tent down this morning.

We did not take the second tent, nor the reindeer, but did take all 6 pillows.

Am still speaking to DH.
