To be annoyed at people on the train who take up another seat with their bags?

I get a really packed train home from work and there are usually quite a few people standing.
Despite this, some people who have a seat obviously think they've paid for a seat for their bag too. They don't even lift it when other people clearly have no seat.
Whereas other 'standers' just leave them to it, I just go up to them and politely say, "I would like to sit down; can you please move your bag."
They usually look really pissed off. It's worth it for the look alone.

We're not offended; just annoyed. Trivial things annoy everyone; it's part of life.

Yeah, they are every bit as annoying as the bag-leavers. Forgot about them.

Why stop at bag leavers - why not list everyone that annoys you? It really isn't worth it, is it?

blueshoes · 20/08/2008 13:19

How about people that sit in the aisle seat, put their bags in the window seat and then put their feet up on the seat in front of them and leave their newspaper on the last unoccupied seat. How about those?

givemeabreak · 20/08/2008 13:20

I think its bad manners to not move bags without being asked. I would put my bag on a seat but would always move my bag onto lap prior to being asked if bus/train was getting busy.

zippitippitoes · 20/08/2008 13:22

commuters appear quite often to have a we are the residents and you are the inferior grockles attitude to day trippers and non regulars

can that be on a list of annoyances (trivial)

Gateau · 20/08/2008 13:22

WHy should I list them? I have no desire to.
If this thread ANNOYS you, then you can leave it.

I'm a (part-time) commuter zippi. And I love to see LOs on the train - they bring a bit of joy and laughter. Different from the usual sour-faced lot on there.

oh Zippitippitoes - I hadn't ever thought that outloud but I do think that sometimes! I am a very considerate commuter and always give up my seat for the grockles with babies etc etc. They should be grateful of course, as it is MY train .

I always hated it when people would try to strike up a conversation on the train as I'm always tired during my commute. The train guard helped an older gentleman to the seat next to mine last night. He started to chat and I must say, it was a fantastic conversation! He turned out to be a Lib Dem Peer with a very colourful background. Lovely chap - glad that I forgot about my silly prejudices for a while.

mayorquimby · 20/08/2008 13:28

. "If you ask them to move, they inevitably stand up and let you take the window seat as they, obviously have to get off the train before you as they are VERY important "

i do that. i hate siting i the wndowseat as you are then blocked in on both sides. at least in the aisle seat i can stretch a leg if needs be. if i'm theere first i fully reserve the rigt to sit in my preferred seat.
i don't put my bag on the window seat or give theimpression that it's taken, merely that if someone is going to sit beside me they will be sitting in the window seat.

Gateau · 20/08/2008 13:34

Nobosy has much space on a train. And I'm sure an elderly person would benefit a lot more from the extra leg room than you, without having to squeeze past you to get into their seat. I despise that "I was there first; it's my right" mentality. If we were all like that the world would be a sad place.
Would it really hurt you to budge over when the train is packed?
Sometimes it's hard to see if there are any spare seats by the window.

Actually, I'm all for a thread about people who annoy us. Could be quite therapeutic (if long).

Bruce Springsteen pisses me for some reason.

Elffriend · 20/08/2008 13:39

or even pisses me off

Would be something of a feat to piss me.

mayorquimby · 20/08/2008 13:42

"Would it really hurt you to budge over when the train is packed?"

what difference does it make?i'm not stopping anyone from sitting down and will happily stand to let anyone past so they don't have to squeeze into the seat.
maybe some people would benefit more from the extra leg room than me although most would not, either way i don't think i should have to justify a preference for where i sit when i'm not preventing anyone else from having a seat.

There was a woman on her mobile this morning arranging a night out...people round her were laughing at her loud and constant phone calls...

" Oh hi, it's me yeah, lets go out and do something craaaaazy. Yeah, we'll get some crazy people together and be crazy and get drunk, cos we're crazy'

WideWebWitch · 20/08/2008 14:02

Katisha, I don't travel on that line any more, THANK GOODNESS as LM are shite imo!

Why are people getting upset on thsi thread, surely it's not reasonable to use a seat for your bag if a PERSON wants it?

mayorquimby · 20/08/2008 14:06

" Oh hi, it's me yeah, lets go out and do something craaaaazy. Yeah, we'll get some crazy people together and be crazy and get drunk, cos we're crazy' "

oh god i hate that attention seeking drivel.
surely any conversation on the bus/train (except emergencies) should not extend beyond should not extend beyond "i'm on the bus i'll see you at xxx/ i'm on the train i'll call you back when i get off"

also people who play music off their phone speakers rather than just through headphones, why?????????

JammyQueenOfTheSewers · 20/08/2008 14:22

OK, while we're at it, I get the bus to work and get annoyed by the people who stand in the aisle at the front of the bus WHEN THERE ARE SEVERAL GOOD SEATS AVAILABLE. Not only do I think it's unsafe, that they are standing, swaying around, and could cause an accident if the bus had to brake sharply etc, it means that the way is blocked for people getting on and off, and when somebody gets on they can't actually see down the bus to see if there are any seats left. So someone who WANTS a seat ends up standing because they mistakenly think there must be no seats available if all these others are standing.

I also get annoyed by the guy who sits with his legs spread taking up 3 seats on the back row of the bus; the woman who talks very loudly and very shrilly, repeating most things in triplicate, most of which are terminally dull anyway; the chap with his too-loud ipod; and the fact that it's only ever me who gets up to give the old lady a seat on Tuesday afternoons. Of course she needs it more than I do, but sometimes I'm really tired and think it wouldn't hurt for someone else to show some manners.

BlingLovin · 20/08/2008 15:13

Someone in my office got up to give her seat to a pregnant woman and this guy zipped into it. She politely said, "sorry, I got up to give that seat to this (heavily) pregnant lady". His response? "I don't give a shit, this is the City. It's a dog eat dog world".

And what kills me about this, is that no one else on the train acknowledged what was happening. if I had been there, I would have loudly and ostentatiously (can't spell, I know) stood up and offered my seat!

DaphneMoon · 20/08/2008 15:28

God I would have smacked him one for that.

moondog · 20/08/2008 15:32

I want to administer good kicking to Bruce Springsteen too funnily enough.

zippitippitoes · 20/08/2008 15:37

i did have a really nice experience with a lovely young man on the train recently

got on and it was really packed had a small wheely case a small backpack and a couple of carrier bags and a large cup of coffee and and a baguette

managed to get down the cariage and up to one of those pairs of seats with no room hardly and was trying to work out how to tow my stuff on the shelf while holding coffee and a bit baffled by this exercies

nice man said shall i hold your coffee for you

so i said yes please

i shed my load some on shelf some between fet and some on lap and eventually reclaimed my coffee

started reading book and unbelievably a few minutes later train announcement

all passengers in carriages x,y and z please move to the front two cariages only

of course we were in carriage x

so i had toi reverse the proceedure huge cup of coffee having been too hot to drink

he even offered to help me once we got off

of course as the entire train was now crammed into two half its length it was totally rammed and i couldnt actually get passed the doorway

ninedragons · 20/08/2008 15:38

My most horrible commuter experience was listening unavoidably to the woman behind me go into loud and graphic detail about her friend's abortion.

MrsTittleMouse · 20/08/2008 15:38

at the "dog eat dog" comment.

babyignoramus · 22/08/2008 12:35

has anyone read that book called 'pains on trains'? - DH got it for Christmas (he's a commuter) and it's soooo true. The question is, why are people travelling on a train with enormous bags during rush hour...? It's usually (admittedly not always) avoidable.
