to think that if marrow was as nice as people make out...

we wouldn't have a plethora of threads every year saying "WTF shall I do with this enormous marrow?"

Because things that are delicious get eaten again and again, they don't get discussed. Nobody starts threads entitled "WTF shall I do with this great big roast chicken?" or "WTF shall I do with all these peaches?" do we?

The answer to all your marrow queries is to ram it firmly into the compost heap, and use it to grow something edible next time!

awww
twas you with the builders and the unfeasibly long thread title
[sympathy]
i come from a family of builders.
miss brick the builders baby, thats me.
pita isnt it?
mine are lovely of course
most especially now that i dont live in a building site with any of them any more.

Soapbox · 20/08/2008 00:53

Well the micro thing doesn't sound good, I admit, but I have tried it cooked in many different ways but in all honesty the micro was by far the best.

You really do need to try it, it is a bit like cabbage - until you taste it cooked properly you just can'r appreciate how nice it can be

HappypillsGalore · 20/08/2008 00:55

weeeelll
i have recently (in last few years) decided that brussel sprouts can actually be nice if not boiled to death
so i guess anythings possible

[skeptical] [does skeptical have a k?? i thought it was a c..]

Aitch · 20/08/2008 00:55

it was me. i thought you'd sympathise, having had your own troubles with them. although mine aren't mine, they belong to the people who live upstairs. or used to, before they moved out and left us in HELL.

Aitch · 20/08/2008 00:56

my mum stir-fries cabbage with garlic. it's really nice.

HappypillsGalore · 20/08/2008 00:57

oh i do i do

oh shit. child wailing. gotta go.

will sympathise further on the morrow

Soapbox · 20/08/2008 00:57

Ah well, this is where I lose all credibility, I love Brussels. Cooked until just done. Wonderful:

Oh and the DCs love them too

Are we just the weirdy veggie loving family then?

Surely other people eat courgettes and BSs?

Soapbox · 20/08/2008 01:01

Aitch - it sounds awful re the builders.

I had some friends who were having some work done on their flat and the woman who lived below them was a writer who wrote a blog. She was moaning a lot about the work they were having done and made a few comments about them and their DD. Somehow or other, they became aware of her blog and started leaving messages for her - it all got a bit out of hand but in the end everyone saw the funny side and made up! I'll try and find the blog - it was hilarious at times

fledtoscotland · 20/08/2008 09:04

oooh - i love marrow! i love courgette too. DS adores marrow in a cheese sauce for his tea

i do love mumsnet - the weirdest topics are discussed

AbbeyA · 20/08/2008 09:11

Marrows are very bland but you can do a lot with them. Stuffed marrow is very easy and cheap.

ThatBigGermanPrison · 20/08/2008 10:07

Yes, but like I say, a similar result could be achieved by wetting stale bread. And that's even cheaper.

AbbeyA · 20/08/2008 10:17

Surely marrow is better for you than stale bread?

Kimi · 20/08/2008 10:27

marrow stuffed with mince....MIL best dish

Lazycow · 20/08/2008 10:33

oh now - Marrow is really not nice.

I love all sorts of vegetable including brussel sprouts, greens (lovely steamed and served with olive oil, balsamic vinegar and soy sauce) cabbage (wonderful in lots of ways - my favourite being stir fried with garlic and sesame seeds) and as dh is a vegetarian we eat loads of veg.

We went through a phase of trying many marrow recipes (we kept getting them in a vege delivery service one year) but dh and I both decided after several attemps that there are almost no marrow recipes worth the bother.

I think we did find one Delia one (involving frying it in bread crumbs or something) that was quite nice but that was it. None of the stuffed recipes were nice at all.

It has an awful watery texture and tastes of nothing as far as I can tell - yuk!

lucykate · 20/08/2008 10:35

i was offered a marrow by one of our neighbours the other day, i declined

Aitch · 20/08/2008 11:01

lol at kimi's mil. gotta be a lot of fun round there for dinner.

HappypillsGalore · 20/08/2008 17:00

ive just been harvesting stuff in the veg patch

dont think ill bother with courgettes next yr

but sweetcorn - man! that stuff is GOOD. its like an edible orgasm, i tell ya.
