to be furious with DH for leaving DS alone

in a multi-storey carpark by the ticket machine while he came back to the car to put the ticket in it. DS is only just 3. The car was only 20 yards from the machine but down a ramp so he couldn't see DS for a good few seconds. The car park was busy with cars driving past. His defence was that he told DS to stay there and not move, and that he was alright. DS is typical of most 3-year-olds and often does not do what is he told. At the time I was getting the baby out of the car and into the pushchair.

I'm not being over-protective, am I?

And your DH is the typical man who thinks that all children obey orders all the time.

But yes, I would be furious, too. Car PArks are dangerous places for small children, simply because reversing cars' drivers can't see them

I don't think it was ideal, no - especially as Ds couldn't see his dad - he could have felt alarmed and alone and set off to look for him..into revesing cars etc.

Why couldn't he have stayed in the car with you until you were ready to go? He shouldn't really have been out of the car in the first place, let alone left alone at the ticket machine - car parks aren't playgrounds.

I would have been very cross with DH.
Your DS deserves lots of praise for being such a good and sensible boy.
Your DH is very lucky that he is.

Oh sod it, i misread your post, op I thought your dh had left your ds in the car whilst he went to get a ticket, so I couldn't see the problem as you were there aswell.

Now I have re-read the op, I think yanbu. But your dh is!

What he should do is

park up
leave child in locked car to go to ticket machine
come back with ticket and take child out

it's pretty basic but perhaps you need to spell it out for him again.

what a dangerous thing to do I mean, what if he had run out into the carpark and had been run over....

You are not at all over-protective - your dh is a loon. As you say, three year olds do not always do what they are told or carry on doing what they are told. They cannot judge the speed of a moving vehicle. Car parks are dangerous places and small children have to be supervised at all times - that doesn't mean telling them 'stay there' and walking out of sight.

Is your h perhaps feeling guilty and refusing to back down? Point out to him that you all got VERY lucky this time and it is never wise to push one's luck.

Like others I misunderstood and at first thought that he had left him in the car and thought YABU. But by the ticket machine? You are certainly not BU. Why? What would it save?

In which case...can you all answer something for me?

Just got back from 2hr journey where ds (10mths) finally screamed himself to sleep after an hour. Needed petrol so stopped.
Left both dcs in car and kept eye on them from store whilst paying. Wasn't keen on leaving them in there but...what do you all do?

Oh I would do that definitely and not worry at all really JBJ. But if you read the OP, he didn't leave the child in the car, but in the car park, by the ticket machine, unattended and briefly out of sight.

Agree the dh in op was an idiot.

But exactly lady!! I could see them but what if...! They were only yards away but still.
