I dont evan know how to start this!

I was on the bus today, off to meet another lovely mntter.
Has ds in his buggy. Another buggy got on, a bloke who lives around the corner from me, i see him at least everyweek, know him by first name. He always says hello as do i, and we've never passed by eachother without him saying hello and speaking to ds - putting money in his pram when he was born blabla.

He is in his 40's i guess.. got on with his daughters(shes young-15- thats all im going by with his age) new baby. I was talking to him and asked how he was liking being a papa.

My dad is called papa.. didnt think anything of it, it's just natural to me to say papa because both my grandfathers were papa to me.

To which he replied.. I'm no papa, i didnt know you were a fenian, farking pape catholic. And so on...
I waqs so stunned all i could say was.. oo what do you get called then. bloody idiot i am never usually left stunned!

WHAT was that all about? What does calling a grandfather papa have to do with religion? I was stunned. I felt reallllly silly.

??Unkind to refer to him as Papa?? Only maybe if he was the baby's Dad??

There are plenty of Papas around here of all denominations!

expatinscotland · 16/08/2008 17:16

I call my father Papa because that is what your dad is called in Spanish.

Well, I did grow up a Catholic, we are mostly of Mexican descent with some French thrown in on my mother's side (her mother), so I call her Mama as well. We still call her Mamacita (little Mama) to wind her up .

Had no idea it had that connotation, though.

This chap sounds unhinged.

I'd cut him a wide berth.

nametaken · 16/08/2008 17:17

oh well you live and learn. Lots of people call male relatives papa.

In that case YANBU, the man's obviously a loon.

Or maybe he's annoyed his 15 year old daughter got pregnant.

Minniethemoocher · 16/08/2008 17:19

No you are not being unreasonable, the man needs to seek psychiatric help, he is clearly unstable! And/or an obnoxious bigoted arse!!

He is the one who should be feeling silly and ashamed of himself!

Totally shocking and unacceptable way to speak to someone!

If it makes you feel better, I would have appreciated that offer of a seat, at 7 months pregnant I am thinking of getting a T shirt that says "I'm not fat, I'm pregnant"!

sparkletoes · 16/08/2008 17:19

Sounds more likely nametaken! (No contraceptives connotations and all)

sparkletoes · 16/08/2008 17:23

i have to say i really dont get it at all. my dh is a rangers man and a total bigot (i hate it btw). dd calls his dad papa so i cant see how u could be called a fenian.

hollyandnoah · 16/08/2008 17:25

She can feck off, at least you offered her a seat! Not many people do that nowadays. To growl at you all the way home is laughable.

I also encountered a very unpleasant man today when driving. He was doing at least twice the speed limit (80 in a 40) as well!

juuule · 16/08/2008 17:30

Well you live and learn.
I've never heard of grandfathers being called papa
and
I've never heard of the pope being called papa.

profsturg · 16/08/2008 17:31

hollyandnoah · 16/08/2008 17:33
