To think that at a 4 year old birthday party it might not be the best idea to show a 12 rated film?

I don't think I'm BU. Just picked up ds1 from a birthday party and he told me they watched the spiderman movie, which looks like it's rated a 12... I wasn't asked or told beforehand, I was a bit surprised the party went on for 3 hours, now I know why!!
Obviously it's done now but never having watched the film myself I've no idea what goes on in it, apart from there being a man with spiderlike abilities!
AIBU to think I should've been told first?

YANBU- I would never show a film rated a 12 to any child less than a 12 without consulting the parents even if I had watched it and deemed it ok for my own children.

Yes some 12s are fairly tame (Harry Potter, Pirates of the Caribbean) but some 12s have lots of unsuitable content (Jumper- swearing, The other Boylyn Girl- sex and insest, Goldmember- lots of sexual references.)

My DD (12) watched a 15 a few weeks ago at a sleepover and I was very cross that I was not asked if it was ok.

At school we are not even allowed to show a PG without the written consent of the parents. (Junior school)

My little brother was afraid of scenes in Snow White at 4 years old. I don't think he was happy when I told his girlfriend that recently (he's 31 now).

Doesn't sound like a great party and I'd be mad about the smoking.

Quite right 'PG' means PARENTAL guidance.
