Started with this news story.

I am aware of arguments for and against deaf drivers (and have deaf friends who drive), but wondered what the MNers thought.

So Yes or No, AIBU????

My brother is deaf and an excellent driver. Much better than me, in fact. I think it makes him more cautious - not to mention less distractable. It's very easy to get caught up in conversation, or startled by noise.

I do think people should have to retake their test every decade or two, though. Driving changes a lot over 40 years or so!

me and my best friend are both deaf. we both drive. some deaf have difficulty with clutch control for example, can't hear when gears need changed and therefore use automatics but we both use 'normal' cars as we can 'feel' that gears need changed. I have a badge on my back window that says deaf driver.
