I can't believe that china even got to host them, and when you see how they have treated people whose houses are in the way
I do hope we don't treat people like that over hear when we host it.

Bowddee · 05/08/2008 22:27

You have a good reason for not wanting to watch.
I just don't want to watch because it bores me rigid.

mumblechum · 05/08/2008 22:30

I never watch any sport ever.

It's just silly.

BTW, that Paula Radcliffe - I can't see her now without remembering her pissing in the street. She will forever be PaulaPissPants in my mind.

JackieNo · 05/08/2008 22:33

I quite like some of the events - the men's swimming and diving events, particularly .

ladymariner · 05/08/2008 22:43

It's the diving I want to see, really hope that young lad, Tom Daley, does well.

And the cycling team kick ass, I shall be rooting for them

Do totally agree with what yu're saying about the Chinese though, 2shoes, their human rights record is appalling. And their performance-enhancing drugtaking means that I could never applaud a Chinese athlete winning anything, I would just wonder what they had taken to get them there....(another thread altogether! Sorry!)

bluefox · 05/08/2008 22:46

YANBU I dont intend to watch any of it.

PeaMcLean · 05/08/2008 22:48

Will be forced to watch some of thanks to DH's sports watching obession

What joy.

JackieNo · 05/08/2008 22:52

Oh, ladymariner, I'd forgotten about him - yes, I'd like him to do well, but not to be too deluged with press attention. Actually I was really thinking of the, ahem, more mature men, and having a bit of a letch.

muggglewump · 05/08/2008 22:58

I find it boring.
I was supposed to be in Oz for the 2000 Olympics and they take sport so seriously and really ram it down your throat. I went to Indonesia and Thailand for 9 weeks and missed it all

ladymariner · 05/08/2008 23:10

Which is why, JackieNo, I will miss Steve Redgrave!!!!

choosyfloosy · 05/08/2008 23:13

and matty pinsent with his lovely cherry cheeks

ah i can't wait. there's no excuse and I shouldn't watch it but i will be there and glued to it. last time i was so obsessed i let ds fall off the bed. it is evil.

choosyfloosy · 05/08/2008 23:13

Beth! Beth! Beth! Tweddle for Gold!

ladymariner · 05/08/2008 23:15

And when Sir Steve won in 2000 I was shouting "come on Steve"/ "yes, yes, yes" etc so loudly (it was in the middle of the night and dh was at work) the neighbours thought I'd got a bloke in

wrinklytum · 05/08/2008 23:19

Though I hate the human rights abuses in China I luurve athletics and will try to catch some of it.I love the running events!

unknownrebelbang · 05/08/2008 23:22

lol ladymariner, my DH was on nights that night, but somehow managed to watch it .

I usually catch bits here and there. Wanted to watch this year in particular, as a colleague's children are both competing, but we're on holiday for part of it so likely to miss it anyway.

Flibbertyjibbet · 05/08/2008 23:23

I think I'll watch the swimming cos I used to be a club swimmer so its 'my' sport iyswim.

However I was reading this week that to cut the pollution, the Chinese govt have ordered that all factories have to close for 2 months. There are millions of workers who have now had no wages for several weeks

So I won't be watching that much. In fact, with the time difference I probably won't be able to watch very much of it at all even if I wanted to.

AbstractMouse · 05/08/2008 23:26

I like the gymnastics, I always remember a couple of olympics ago a russian me and my sis took a fancy to, Alexie summat or other (nemov?), god he was gorgeous, we used to hyperventilate whenever he was on the screen lol.

Obviously I also watch for the competition etc ffs I even watched fecking curling once.

suedonim · 05/08/2008 23:33

I'm still in shock that they even awarded the Olympics to China in the first place. How dh and I laughed when the committee came out with all that guff about China reforming itself now it was to hold such a prestigious event - I think the committee actually believed its own propaganda. I feel like crying now, even just seeing the air pollution over the venue, let alone all the other wrongs. So no, YANBU to avoid the Olympics.

KelaH · 06/08/2008 10:53

I think it is awful that it went to China, but I will still be watching what I can - is that hypocritical? Not sure. But really want to watch the tennis, athletics, swimming, gymnastics.....

mm22bys · 06/08/2008 11:27

I don't want to watch it, but I know I will.

Hindsight's 20:20, but it should never have been awarded to China, they have made a mockery of the whole event.

Bring on 2012...

whoops · 06/08/2008 11:36

I'll watch the hockey and a few other sports
It's the only time I watch sport on the tv and it'll be nice having something to watch in the evenings instead of half the crap they seem to put on

branflake81 · 06/08/2008 11:41

OK fine, boycott China - but what about those thousands of athletes who have trained so hard for the games? This is their chance to do something amazing, something very few of us could even dream of achieving and it's unfair on them if people don't watch for "moral" reasons.

PheasantPlucker · 06/08/2008 12:28

Sorry but even the TV ad is annoying me already!!

ninedragons · 07/08/2008 10:55

I thought Paula Radcliffe did a poo, not a wee?

Urgent come-from-nowhere need-to-poo-now poos are known as Paulas in our house but we may need to revise that.

saltire · 07/08/2008 11:15

I too don't think that China should have got the Olympics, but as branflake says - it's not aobut China, its the athletes, who train hard all year and this is the goal isn't it - an Olympic medal.
I also happen to think that there is going to be big trouble of some sort there. DH is convinced there will be riots and shooting etc.
I read that all the locals have been told not to hang washing out, or go out their houses whent ehg ames are on. Could you jsut imagine the reaction if the Government told all Londoners, in 2012 "stay in your houses during the games and don't hang your washing out"

Alambil · 07/08/2008 11:47

No - paula did a number 1
