my mil 74 years old wanted to go see her sister in scotland she wanted to spend 14 hours on a coach then spend 5 hours sat in a coach station before someone could collect her she has just had a knee replacement so convinced her after many arguements discussions found her flight from eastleigh bout half hours drive for £60.00 with flybe, her sister then found ryanair had special offer from airport bout hours drive shown as £3.00 flight when paid for became £42.00 special offer was shown as about to expire so she booked it and forgot to look at terms and conditions so she booked with them in haste we have now found will cost mil another £85 to buy passport quickly as flight is in 4 weeks as ryanair really anal unless she was 4 years older then would not need passport fee as would be free cannot get refund from ryanair so she can either

  1. loose £40 paid in fare book with flybe
  2. buy passport she will never use other than for this flight
  3. find someone who wants to buy ticket from her but can't find anyone local who wants/needs it

def worth trying, not sure how its works or if she needs some sort of gp note, but could be a way round it.

WendyWeber · 05/08/2008 10:12

ryanair themselves wouldn't refund for illness - she'd need to have taken out cancellation cover for that (& for someone of 74 that would be expensive!)

I still can't believe they would turn her away if she had her bus pass & pension book.

I think MIL last flew with them about a year ago, she flew with XL last time so maybe ryanair have changed their policy since.

LadyMuck · 05/08/2008 18:23

Has she definitely never had a passport before? Passport renewal for an over 70 is free.

busymum1 · 05/08/2008 18:24

are you sure she was told only born before 1929 not for her born 1933?

It is never unreasonable to be annoyed with Ryan Air. My DH saw a completely different side to me on one memorable occasion with them. I vowed then never to use them again.

LadyMuck · 05/08/2008 18:26

Oh - I might be getting confused with driving licence renewal then - the fees definitely stop at some age.

busymum1 · 05/08/2008 18:30

just checked she gotta be over 78 she nearly 75 so still 3 years to go

BTW the Ryanair site seems to indicate that she would be charged £80 for a name change on the flight so selling the ticket is probably nto an option.

busymum1 · 05/08/2008 18:44

can not get through to human what a surprise spent last hour on phone NO HUMANS anywhere ryanair must be run by martians with no common sense, oops is that insulting martians too much?

OK - what looks like a definitive answer from a Daily Telegraph travel column here (scroll down).

It's dated Oct 2007, but I found other bits via google that said they stopped taking anything other than what it says on the website in 2003/4:

Lose the £40 & rebook with Flybe looks like your safest option, bm1.

God I hate ryanair

busymum1 · 06/08/2008 08:35

thanks ww agree losing money seems only option just so annoyed however will ring and see if by any miracle they will accept citizen card at least then she can prove at 74 she is over 18 and lives in england as opposed to the terrorist they obviously think she must be on her way to cause mutiny in scotland
